SAMANTHA
What I was thinking must show on my face because Alpha Conrad’s smirk turned into a full blown grin, causing me to cringe and another emotion I could not understand to flow through me.
How the f**k do I get out of this ugly situation? s**t! I should have allowed my manager to fire me when I had the opportunity. I should never have agreed to come here.
It was foolish of me to think the alpha Conrad won’t find out who I was because I dyed my hair. For goodness sake, I was his mate so it was reason enough for him to comb through the guest list and investigate the plus ones that came with his guest just to find me. I was a goddamn fool for even remaining in his pack. I should have run, with my leg touching the back of my head, when I still had the chance. Now, it is gone and I will have to deal with the aftermath. Running from one problem only to get entangled in another? s**t, I must be running low on luck.
I looked away from Alpha Conrad’s face to Elara and I knew immediately that she was going to deny and lie on my behalf. I did not want that. She’s helped me a whole lot already and even if Conrad was her cousin, I did not want her getting in trouble with him.
I quickly answered before she had the opportunity to speak, “Yeah, we know each other. I live with Elara.” Her eyes widened like a saucer pan in her face. I looked away.
“Oh,” Alpha Conrad looked from me to Elara and I watched her flinch when his eyes landed on her. “Elara did not tell me about this.”
Elara swallowed thickly, “I did tell you about the guest I have in my house. I didn’t show you her picture, that’s all,”
I thought alpha Conrad was going to make an issue out of it but he only said, “Hmm. Okay,” then he turned and left.
My breath rushed out of me and I nearly collapsed to the floor as my knees weakened in relief.
“That was intense,” Luna Aeliana said.
Tell me about it.
Oh hell, with the whole confrontation, I’d forgotten that there were other people here. As I raised my head, I could see everybody watching me. I had the urge to run and hide but all I could do was stand there and hope that the Luna wouldn't ask me questions in front of them.
“Now, moving on with the discussion of the event…”
Thank you, blessed moon goddess. I was supposed to be listening attentively to everything the Luna was saying but my mind drifted off to a certain man with dark red hair, tanned skin, gold eyes and a smile that could make ladies drop their panties in a heartbeat.
How do I get out of this situation now? I wanted nothing to do with Alpha Conrad. Mate or not, I wanted to be alone.
All my life, everything had been arranged for me and all I had to do was go with the flow obediently and where did that get me? Nowhere. I ended up with a man who cheated on me with my best friend.
What I needed now was freedom. Freedom to choose and do everything I wanted. I was not a princess here so I did not have to behave a certain way, — act ladylike, because people were watching — I was no longer under my father’s watch either because the last place he would expect me to be was here.
Our pack did not have much connection with the Whiteclaw pack so he wouldn't think of looking for me here. My father knew all my friends, he helped me make them so it was no surprise, Elara was the only one he did not know of.
“Sam,”
I snapped out of my many thoughts when I heard Elara’s voice calling my name close to me. I blinked as my environment came into focus only to see that Luna Aeliana was no longer present and everybody was moving out of the hall. s**t, I got so consumed in my thoughts I did not even hear anything or notice when the Luna was leaving.
“Sam, are you okay?”
I attempted to smile and reassure her that I was fine, but my lips twisted into a grimace instead. Panic surged through me as the reality of my situation crashed down on me with full force. I grabbed onto Elara’s shoulders with wide eyes.
“He knows. He knows that I’m his mate. He knows I’m the one he’s been looking for. What am I supposed to do, Elara? I don’t want any man again. I’ve just run away from one only to end in the pack of another. For f**k sake, I caught him f*****g another woman in the garden during that ball. His reputation is not so good and he is a f*****g womanizer. What am I to do? Why does the moon goddess keep shoving me into situations like this? I’ve never done anything wrong to anybody. Am I paying for my father’s sin?” Overwhelmed by my current situation, I broke down completely, spilling everything out in the open.
A knot formed in my chest and I could feel pressure build up in my nose and ears. Everything turned blurry as my vision clouded with tears.
“Hey, come here,” Elara’s voice was a soft whisper as she drew me into her arms and enveloped me in a hug.
The dam finally burst, unleashing a torrent of tears that streamed down my face. I sobbed uncontrollably, clinging to Elara as she wrapped her arms around me, offering silent comfort. Her gentle pats on the back were a soothing balm to my shattered emotions.
I did not know how long had passed before the tears stopped coming. Embarrassment tinted my cheeks pink as I dropped my hands from around Elara and tried to move away. She let me go and I could not meet her eyes.
“Sorry,” I apologized through a hiccup, “I didn't mean to break down and force all my problems down your throat.” I wiped the embarrassing streaks of tears that were still lingering on my cheeks.
Elara gave me a sad but understanding smile, “It’s okay. Sometimes I break down too when things get so overwhelming. I’m just glad that I was here with you so you don’t have to go through this alone.”
I finally raised my head to meet her eyes. I was grateful that she was my friend. If not for her, I might have been forced to get married to Zach even after I caught him cheating because I wouldn’t have had where to run to.
“Thank you,”
Elara’s head tilted to the side as she watched me with an unreadable expression, causing me to begin to feel uncomfortable. It wiggled my fingers.
When she finally spoke, I wished the ground would open and swallow me completely.
“Now that you have stopped crying, how about you explain what you mean by Conrad being your mate,”
