Chapter 7 – Confrontation in the Garden
The night air in the Red Moon Pack garden was crisp, scented with jasmine and the faint earthiness of wet soil. Zendaya’s heart pounded as she sat on the cold stone bench, her hands gripping the edges. Zane stood a few feet away, his tall frame stiff, his piercing blue eyes fixed on her.
Zendaya and Zane were enjoying their alone time, relishing the feeling of having a mate and the spark they felt each time they touched.
She swallowed hard, trying to suppress the flurry of emotions rising in her chest. Trusting Zane felt natural, but there was still a flicker of fear, fear of the unknown, of letting herself lean on someone so dangerous and so utterly captivating.
I… I left home to have a few days of peace, Zendaya admitted, her voice trembling. I needed to escape, to breathe. But now I have to face them. And I want you to come with me. I… I want them to see you, to know who I’ve chosen.
Zane was excited to listen to her talk; her voice was soothing, soft, and it made him feel things that he had never felt before. Zane had agreed to accompany Zendaya back to the Dark Moon Pack, but he needed some alone time with her, so she asked her if they could spend a few days together in the Red Moon Pack, and then they would go back to her home.
Zendaya did not entertain the idea because she knew her parent will be worried sick about her, so she turned him down.
Zane’s eyes darkened, the kind of intensity that sent shivers down her spine. “Then we leave at first light.” He took a step closer, and the faint scent of earth, wood, and something uniquely his enveloped her. “No one will harm you, Zendaya. Not while I’m with you.
Before Zendaya could respond, the sharp snap of twigs behind them made her flinch. She turned to see Alex, storming into the garden, his frown deepening as he caught sight of them.
Zendaya! Alex barked, a voice laced with fury. How cheap can you be? To move on so fast, just like that?
Zane’s hand instinctively went to Zendaya’s back, a protective gesture that made Alex’s eyes flash with rage. Step back, Zane said coldly. She’s not yours anymore. Zane growled with possessiveness.
Alex laughed bitterly, taking a step closer. Not mine? She was fated to me! And now you think you can just take her?
Zendaya felt her chest tighten. The words cut deep, a sharp contrast to the serenity she’d been hoping for in this garden. She looked at Alex, hurt, anger, and disbelief warring inside her. Alex, stop! You don’t understand.
You think I don’t understand? Alex shouted. I understand perfectly! You’ve thrown everything away. You’ve thrown me away. And now you’re
Zane’s hand moved, gripping Alex’s arm with a strength that pinned him in place. Enough, Zane growled. You don’t get to insult her. Not here. Not now.
The tension was palpable, electric, as the three of them stood in the dim moonlight. Zendaya’s eyes filled with tears, but she refused to let them fall. Her heart thudded painfully. She had loved Alex for so long, but now, with Zane standing beside her, she realized that the safety, the fierce loyalty, and the strange, thrilling pull she felt toward Zane were undeniable.
Finally, Alex shoved Zane away, eyes blazing. This isn’t over, he spat. Without another word, he turned and stalked out of the garden, leaving a trail of fury and resentment behind him.
Zendaya sank back on the bench, heart racing. Zane knelt beside her, hand brushing away an escaped strand of her blonde hair. I won’t let anyone hurt you, he murmured, his voice low and steady. Not him. Not anyone.
She met his gaze, her own emotions a storm. I… I don’t know what the future holds, Zane. But right now, I need to go home. I need them to see you, to understand that this… this is real.
Zane nodded. Then we go together. At first light, we face your family. Together.
And in that quiet, moonlit garden, amidst the scent of jasmine and earth, Zendaya felt a flicker of hope, a fragile trust forming, a trust that this ruthless, terrifying, yet breathtaking Alpha was going to be her protector, her ally, and perhaps, the one who would mend her shattered heart.
