When I woke up, a hint of daylight had crept into the room and there was a loud murmur coming through the gap in the wall. I realized it was the sound of people in the building behind us – people who were dressing their children, calling out reminders, making coffee, taking showers. At the construction site in El Raval, it was always the lack of noise that had alerted us it was almost morning.
