(Amara's POV)
"Who's there?" With a trembling voice, I screamed out, grabbing a vase for support.
The dark penthouse echoed with the sound of increasingly loud footsteps. I could feel the pounding of my heart in my throat. The whole room was in complete darkness after the electricity was cut off, and now there was a person inside.
I leaned against the wall and gripped the vase more tightly, my hands trembling. I could hear the subtle creak of the floors with the weight of the approaching footsteps.
I was about to scream when Elias arrived in the doorway and a flashlight beam broke through the darkness.
"It's just me," he stated in a composed yet forceful tone. "The power's out."
I shakily exhaled, my legs almost collapsing beneath me. I said, "You scared me," in a voice that was hardly audible above a whisper.
With the room illuminated by his flashlight, Elias took a step closer. His tone was stern as he remarked, "You shouldn't be wandering around in the dark."
I said, "I heard footsteps," in a shaky voice. "I thought someone was in the house."
Elias's face grew serious. He said, "Stay here," and turned to walk out of the room.
"Wait!" With my heart pounding, I called out. "What if it's not safe?"
He stopped and looked back at me. "It's safer than following me," he answered quietly.
"How can you be sure?" I retaliated with a burst of anxiousness.
I saw the tension in Elias' eyes as he hesitated for a second. "I'll be right on time. Simply remain where you are.
Though my thoughts were racing, I nodded. What if there was a person inside the house? Could it have been Lukas?
I had a shiver down my spine when Elias slipped out. Without him, the darkness felt more pressing. I tightened my hold on the vase, prepared to defend myself if needed.
The minutes passed slowly, with every second seeming endless. I heard sounds—the rustle of cloth, distant thuds. I strained to listen, my heart pounding.
Elias's quiet, agitated voice suddenly came to me. "Amara!"
Panic sweeping through me. I hurried to the door. "Elias, what's happening?"
When he yelled, "Stay back!" my heart fell.
I heard footsteps once more, then a low, ominous laugh this time.
As we sat in the dark, Elias whispered grimly, "Your father is planning something big."
Elias had set a flashlight on the table, and it was the only source of light in the living room. The penthouse was disturbingly silent, like a creature ready to attack, yet the power was still out.
Still trembling from earlier, I nodded. "What do we do?" My question was hardly audible above a whisper.
Elias's jaw tensed as he paused. He said, "We fight back," at last. "But you'll have to trust me."
My heart was racing as I gazed at him. Have faith in him? How could I trust him after everything that had transpired and everything I had discovered about him and Lukas?
"What if I can't?" My voice trembled as I asked.
For a brief moment, Elias's eyes softened, but they vanished so fast that I feared I might have dreamed. His voice was icy and determined as he stated, "You don't have a choice."
My nails dug into my hands as I clenched my fists. "I'm not a pawn in your game, Elias," I replied, raising my voice in rage.
His eyes were sharp as he leaned forward. "This isn't a game, Amara," he continued in a menacingly low voice. "Your father is dangerous, and if you don't trust me, you're going to get yourself killed."
I gulped forcefully, my thoughts racing. Could he be correct? What if there was truly nothing I could do?
"Okay," I murmured in an almost audible voice. "What do we do?"
A glimmer of appreciation appeared on Elias's face as his expression changed. "We collect data. We must be aware of Lukas's plans.
I nodded, feeling more determined than ever. "Let's do it."
As we entered the forbidden warehouse, Lukas grinned and remarked, "You shouldn't have come here."
We arrived here after following a lead—a tip from one of Elias's acquaintances. But I could tell something wasn't right as soon as we entered.
The moonlight outside the windows was the only source of light in the pitch-black, deserted warehouse. There was a coolness in the air that caused the hairs on the back of my neck to stand on end.
With a revolver in his hand, Lukas then emerged from the shadows.
I glanced at him, my thoughts reeling from the events, my heart pounding. I said, "Lukas," in a shaky voice. "What are you doing?"
My skin crawled as he laughed, a loud, sour sound. With a tone full of derision, he asked, "What does it look like, Amara?" "I'm ending this."
Elias moved in front of me, using his body to protect me. "You're not going to win, Lukas," he stated in a stern, unyielding voice.
Lukas grinned, his vile eyes shining. Saying, "Oh, I already have," he held out the firearm.
Panic was building in my throat, and my heart was thumping in my chest. I begged, "Lukas, please," in a trembling voice. "Don't do this."
He looked at Elias and ignored me. "This ends now," he whispered, gripping the trigger with a tighter finger.
"Stop!" With a voice full of desperation, I yelled. "You don't have to do this!"
For a brief period, Lukas's grin wavered, but he soon recovered his poise. "You believe you can convince me otherwise? "That's too late now."
Elias spoke steadily and in a quiet voice. "Lukas, you're doing something wrong. Nothing will be resolved if I am killed.
Lukas chuckled once again, his voice cold. Do you believe that this is about you? Power is at issue, and I'm reclaiming it."
The sound of sirens flooded the air before Lukas could squeeze the trigger. He paused, his gaze flitting to the doorway.
However, it was too late.
In the still warehouse, the sound of the gunshot was deafening.
As I saw the mayhem unfold, I let out a scream, the sound ripping from my throat. Everything appeared to slow down.
"Elias!" My heart thumping in my chest, I yelled.
Lukas lowered the rifle as his face turned into a terrified one. Elias was staggering back, and I could see that he was shocked.
"No!" I hurried over, but Lukas ran out the door before I could get to him, and his silhouette vanished into the darkness.
"Elias!" I sobbed when I felt the earth sway beneath me.
With his hand pressed against his shoulder and blood flowing between his fingers, he fell to the ground.
"Stay with me!" I knelt next to him and begged. "Help is on the way!"
With weak gasps of breath, he shook his head. "Amara... it's too late."
"Don't say that!" With tears running down my cheeks, I pleaded. "I can't lose you!"
His eyes were filled with agony and something else, fear, as he stared up at me. Feeling sorry? "You need to get out of here... before he comes back. No! "I won't abandon you." Panic is building in me, I insisted.
"Elias, please!"
However, I could feel the weight of dread bearing down on me as his eyes grew darker.
Then there came the sound of footsteps. My heart was pounding as I turned.
"Help!" In the vain hope that it was someone who could help him, I yelled.
However, I froze when the stranger entered the faint light. Once more, Lukas was there, grinning cruelly.
"I told you this wasn't over," he said with a wicked grin and gleam in his eyes.
My heart fell. "No! "Avoid him!"
Lukas moved in closer, the shadows enveloping him like a shroud. "You truly believed you could get out of this? You're more involved than you realize.
The sirens' sound then became louder, but would it reach me in time?
I knew this was far from over, and there was a lot of tension in the air.
