He was hanging by a thread and knew it.
And it was not just his physical life that was in immediate danger of termination; nor, if he were truthful, would the loss of that corporeal existence trouble him over much under the present circumstances.
His mental condition, should he stay alive to be in possession of one, was the concern overriding all others at that moment.
How, given what had been done to him and remained ongoing, could he ever aspire to his former dignity – let alone the manhood that had once set him apart from his fellow travellers in the worlds within which he moved?
Assuming of course, and once again, that he was left alive at the end of his ordeal to return to those worlds.
