Chapter 18: The Edge of It All

526 Words
The wind carried the scent of ash and pine. All have cleared out . The fire had died down to glowing embers, casting restless shadows across the clearing. Daine sat with his back to a log, boots stretched out, arms draped over his knees. He hadn’t said much since the others left earlier that evening. Mira had said even less. She paced a few steps, then finally sat down near him but not close. Just enough to share the silence. He exhaled sharply. “So… what now?” Mira stared at the trees. “Don’t know. You tell me.” He rubbed his face. “I thought you'd be gone the second this was over.” “And I thought you were already halfway packed.” Daine turned to her. “That’s what you think of me?” “I don’t know what to think, Daine. You don’t say anything.” “Neither do you,” he snapped. “Unless it’s about patrol or defense grid failures.” “Don’t turn this on me. You’re the one who looked at me like you’d already made up your mind to disappear.” “I didn’t want to screw up whatever life you were heading to,” he said louder now. “I didn’t want to be the reason you stayed.” Mira stood. “And you think I want to go?” “I didn’t know!” he exploded, standing up too. “You—you matter, Mira. You’re this constant in all this madness, and I didn’t know how to ask you to stay without it sounding like I was… weak.” Her eyes burned, suddenly glassy. “You think I don’t feel the same? That I didn’t wait for you to say something first because I was terrified it would ruin what we had?” Their breathing quickened. The tension between them reached its limit. “I’m not good at this,” he said hoarsely. “You know that.” “Me neither.” They stood still, shaking, exhausted, hearts wide open. Then, without thinking, they collided not just a kiss, but something messier, fiercer. It was grief and relief and something neither of them had words for. Their lips parted, breathless. Not from the kiss, but from everything it carried. Mira sniffed, blinking fast. “Damn it, Daine. Why do you have to make everything so difficult?” Daine gave a half laugh, wiping his cheek where there tears had smudged. “You think I enjoy this chaos? You’re the one who made my perfectly detached life unbearable.” She pushed at his chest, half-mad, half-melting. “You’re such a pain.” He caught her hand, held it tight. “And you’re impossible. But I’m not going anywhere. Not now. Not till... I stop breathing, maybe.” Mira looked at him, eyes glossy again. “Same. You’re stuck with me, Daine. Even if you run to the edge of the damn world. Daine nodded slowly, lips twitching. “Good. Guess we’re both screwed.” They stayed there foreheads pressed, hearts calmer, for once with the unspoken words finally said the way they understood them best.
