Hidden behind the dense brush, Mira and Daine crouched in silence, barely breathing. The voices carried through the trees, clear and sharp in the still night air.
“It’s done. The body’s safe, near the rocks past the old ridge,” one man muttered.
“That was close,” the second man replied. “Could’ve gone bad if anyone else had seen.”
The first scoffed. “We’re just doing what we’re told. Orders didn’t come from officials this time. These are from tycoons straight.
The officers are involved?
“Yeah, some higher-ups in the forest department are tangled in this mess too,” the second added in a lower tone.
“No wonder no one knew about these activities in the restricted area which is said untouched in the name of conservation"
A short laugh followed. “Too bad it didn’t work. That crooked woman has wired the place like a trap. Cameras, sensors everywhere.”
“Heard they’re tough. The other one have exposed smugglers, ran clean ups before. No softies.”
“And now they're sniffing too close. The whole thing cracked open after the partners turned on each other. One’s dead. The other panicked and tried to bury the trail.”
“If not for that fallout, none of this would’ve spilled into the core zone. This place was meant to stay off-grid.”
“Now it’s hot. Those two officers are getting close. We find their bunker, this ends fast.”
