"Thank you for giving me this opportunity. I won’t let you down." Jasmine beamed and bowed slightly before walking majestically out of his office.
"How did it go? What did he say?" Caleb asked, hovering around her. She smiled widely at him and grabbed him by the collar, dragging him toward her office.
She hauled him into the office and closed the blinds. Caleb gave her a confused look and folded his hand.
"You look happy," he commented.
"That’s because I just got offered a case," she said.
"You mean we?" he corrected.
"Yea, this case is my trip to becoming an actress. The mayor is in on this one, and I need to start making moves to catch the criminal," she said.
"This calls for a celebration, and it will be the most important case in your detective career," he said with a smirk.
"You're right, detective Caleb, I need to start looking into this; the killer has something to do with those cards with the devil's breed on them." She said,
"I did some research last night just as you asked me to do, and I found out that "Devil’s Breed" is a gangster group in town that people don’t talk about. They are secretive and attack their prey like night owls. I think the politicians are the ones killing each other for one reason or the other," Caleb said.
Jasmine stroked her chin. "You could be right; in the world of politics, there are always a lot of rivals and enemies." She commented.
"That’s why. You don’t have to think about the case tonight. Let’s go out and have some fun. Then you can think about the case." Caleb said.
"I can’t have some fun, this case is the key to my dream job," she said, walking over to her desk.
"Jaz, you are so boring. Let’s go out tonight and celebrate. When was the last time you had a dopamine rush?" He asked.
She shot him with a dagger eye.
"You wanna die?" she asked. He smiled nervously "No but…" she cut in.
"Go grab your dancing shoes, we are going out," she said with a smirk.
"Yes!" he yelled and ran out of her office. All the employees stared at him.
"Detective Caleb, what’s making you so happy?" one of them inquired.
"Nothing, it’s a good day, don’t you think?" He asked and sighted the dark clouds outside the company.
"s**t!" he muttered.
"It’s going to rain. It’s way past our working hours. The boss has already asked us to leave," one of them said, clearing his desk.
Leonardo put on sunglasses, slid a card into his jeans pocket, and put on a leather jacket, ready to go to the nightclub before the rain met him.
Later that night,
Leonardo was standing in front of the club waiting for the politician to arrive, holding a yellow umbrella above his head as the rain poured on his body.
"Hey! You there? Are you ready to get drained in the rain?" The bouncer that was guiding the club asked him.
"I am waiting for someone," Leonardo said, with a robotic voice.
"Wait somewhere else, this is a confidential area." the bouncer retorted.
He decided to go into the club to wait for the politician to arrive. He sat close to the bar, looking at the half-naked teenagers that were dancing in the club to upbeat music, not caring if it was raining outside.
He glanced at his wristwatch.
"What is taking that asshole so long?" he thought, looking at the entrance when he spotted Jasmine walking in with Caleb by her side.
As she rested her umbrella on the wall, she was putting on a one-shoulder hot dress that cut out her hourglass shape while adding spicy details to her figure. He opened his eyes wide in surprise.
"She is that dumbass detective." he muttered to himself, still staring at her, he knew she wouldn’t recognize him. For some reason, he couldn’t get his eyes off her body.
"One glass of cocktail please." Jasmine said, standing in front of the bartender with Caleb, who was lustfully staring at her.
"I didn’t know you were this sexy, Jaz," he said.
"Knock it out, and keep your naughty eyes off my body, or I will blind them." She threatened and took the cocktail.
Leonardo smiled at her as she eyed him and subconsciously waved his hand at her, regretting his action immediately.
"Hey, handsome," Jasmine said, smiling at him. She found his eye color to be familiar and it reminded her of the strange man she saw at the masquerade ball. He ignored her, with his eyes fixed on the door of the club.
A shabby old man with a bald head and two ladies in his arms made their way into the club. "Jackpot." Leonardo muttered to himself and stood up on his feet.
The old man was the politician he had been waiting for, for ages. Jasmine scrunched her face as he saw that Leonardo ignored her, thinking she was not beautiful enough to grab a man's attention.
The old man walked over to the counter, eye-f*****g Jasmine, as the two ladies he was holding let go of him.
"Go and dance girls, I will join you, I just want to talk to this damsel." he said, winking at Jasmine.
"Stay away from her. She is my girlfriend." Caleb said, standing in front of Jasmine. She grabbed his ear and pulled him out of her way, flipping her hair in the face of the politician. He grabbed a strand of her hair and sniffed it.
"And she smells good," the man said.
"Stay out of this. I am trying my shot with guys." Jasmine said, glaring at Caleb. He screwed up his face.
"With an old guy? Come on," he stated.
"Shh, step away." she said, and pushed him away by the chest. Caleb sat next to Leonardo, who adjusted to the extreme end of the chair, and a girl walked over to them and sat on Leonardo’s lap. He grasped her hair and pushed her away from him. She landed on her bum, looking up at him.
"Who said you could sit in my lap? Who gave you that right!!" Leonardo snapped, glaring at her in disgust. He didn’t want to have a bond with any woman or sleep with whores. All he wanted to do was avenge his parents' deaths, and love could come after.
"I just wanted to keep you company since you are alone," she said. Everyone turned to look at Leonardo, including Jasmine.
"I am not alone. I am with myself. Now go!!" Leonardo said, with a lot of fire in his eyes.
