Chapter Two

1871 Words
**Agent Luther POV** For a vampire our senses were already heightened, but I thought I had this under control after a hundred years. He was quite used to the smells of humans by now. At first they all smelt so good, but most of their smells were made up of the same thing. For us it was like picking out of a box of chocolate and getting the same one every time. There was very, very few rare flavors to try after a thousand eternal years of youth. It helped keep hunting undistracted, until a heavenly smell distracted him from this weeks catch of the day. He had been tracking the windigo hybrid for weeks and the trai had landed him in Deadfall, Montana. A small little mountain town near the Canadian boarder. I-90 led out of it, but in order to find it you had to be brought here or from here. He had followed his latest kill days ago, had an altercation with a young boy and followed him back into the woods, but lost him. He was nearly on the trail again when it hit him. It was like a mix between strawberries and chocolate mixed with the finest dark whiskey your lips would ever taste. A smell he had never, smelt before, well not since he was human. It was intoxicating and drew him back to the young girls crime scene. Her scent had driven him in and away from his hunt. Crouched on the cliff above him he cursed himself for being this close to her and not having better control over the urge to hunt her. He hadn't done that in years, not since he was a young fleshing. He watched the raven haired woman wrapped up head to toe walk her way around the crime scene tuned into her voice which was like smooth and warm like honey. Mixed with her smell, he just wanted to sink his teeth into her neck and savor her. His mouth was already watering, figuratively, and he could feel the veins under his eyes move making blood rush into his eyes darkening them around the whites making the red more prominent. He had to control himself and remind himself he wasn't that thing anymore. He wasn't that monster he was as a young vampire. Even if she was irresistible.  Digging his nails into his palms using the paint to remind himself he was still there and still technically alive even if it was and undead alive, he watched her move along the scene until she was back where the body had been. She met up with who he could only assume was her captain and update him, and a scary thought came over his mind. He should have kept his distance, but he wanted to get to know her. Wanted to smell her up close and ask her who she was see how she would solve this case the human way. But a small part of him wanted to protect her as well. She was the windigo's type. Tall, young, beautiful and untouched by anything that might taint her blood. She had no tattoos he could see her blood didn't smell of it either. Her body pretty much remained perfect as well as untouched in other ways.  Movement in the trees told him, she was already on his radar and he wasn't working alone because this wasn't the same young boy he chased the other night. He waited for her to get into her car and drive away before he jumped down where she had been and soaked in the quickly fading scent. He should have chased after the creature he had been hunting but his mind was distracted and instead followed her scent back to the town. Standing across the street from her office he watched her closely moving about, gathering intel and trying to find a place to start. It eventually led her to the girls house, and he could smell the pain, sadness and anger rise inside her. It made her smell more like a wildfire then her natural scent but that wasn't one he was used to either. She was different. Their investigation was only a few hours in and she was already hot on the tail, or at least a start of the trail. He knew about everything he knew as to how the damn monster got the girl, but he was tired of watching her. He wanted to meet her. Getting back to the abandoned building he was hiding out in he changed into his nicest suit, grabbed the badge, gun and ID from his FBI days, he was back at the office she worked in before she even got back to the office.  "Hello, I am agent Kai Luther. I'm with the FBI." He held up his badge to the secretary who was mesmerized by him the moment she walked in. Her scent was a nice distraction. It was one of the more common smells, like copper and honey with a hint of arousal. A smell he had smelt a thousand times. She was most likely the town w***e or one of them at least. "I am here about the Jade Doe case from this morning." "Wow, news sure does travel fast." She giggled at him and stood up with a stack of papers in her hands. "Follow me to Detective Lazarus' office. She's the lead on the case. Oh and the girls name is Stacy Longdale. Here's the case file we keep up front in case we have this kind of interest. I will tell her you're here when I see her. Just sit in her office, though if you have a the time I could entertain you?" She kept rambling on and the entire time he was rolling his eyes hoping she would shut up while she led him up the two flight of stairs to her office. The moment the stepped inside he was hit with her scent that remained there strong as if she was in the room. She spent a lot of time here clearly. He looked around the room and tried to keep composure.  "No thank you. I am fine. You can go." He could smell disappointment from her as she walked away from him and closed the door behind here. He laid down the case file not really needing to read it. He was more then up to date about the case. It seemed like hours before the door was opening and a fresh smell wafted into the room making his eyes flood with blood once again. He took a moment, stopping himself from breathing in order to keep her smell away and gather his composure. She didn't seem to notice him at first, while he stood and faced her adjusting his suit like any federal agent would. When she finally looked up to face him she was more then stunned and it took everything he had not to try and see what her smell had changed.   "Who are you?" She asked with that sweet, smooth honey like voice that had a touch of curiosity to it. Clearing his throat he held out his hand to her.  "Hello Detective. I am special agent Luther. It's a pleasure to finally meet you." He said waiting for her to take his hand. She completely avoided his hand and walked past him around the desk and to her chair. He cleared his throat and turned to face her again. "I see pleasantries won't be happening?" "What are you doing here agent Luther?" She asked him completely dismissing his questions, hand or presence it seemed. Her eyes scanned the desk and noticed the case file making her eyebrow twitch a little, while she bit the inside of her cheek and sighed in annoyance. Clicking her tongue she gave an annoyed chuckle like she couldn't believe it and looked up at him again. "Does the ivory tower think I can't handle a simple murder case?" "It's not like that Detective Lazarus. May I call you Scarlett?" He asked sitting down in the chair in front of her desk once more. He smiled softly showing off his canines and looked her over discreetly. Already he liked her spitfire. "I've kept a close eye on her cases around here, but this is the first one that is linked to others cases throughout the Canadian border. This killer has killed before and well this one has a particular interest to my boss." "So you won't mind me calling him then? Verifying that you will be offering aide on the case?" She asked picking up her phone. He remained calm and smirked at her.  "Go right ahead. Here is his card." He handed her a card with the name of his best friend who helped him get into the system. Rodger was more than smart. He was a tech wiz and could make anything seem real if you let it. "And here's my badge as well so you can look up my id if you like." She took them both with a pull and sat down on her chair. Dialing the number he heard it ring while she punched in the FBI website and started to search for his ID. Her heart beat quickly realizing he was telling the truth, or the truth he wanted her to know, and waited for someone to answer the call. A gruff, angry voice came over the phone. 'Hello, Agent Lawrence speaking.' "Hello sir, this is detective Lazarus with the Deadfall police department in Montana. I have agent Luther in my office saying that you sent him here to work on my Jane Doe case with me?" She asked him looking between the computer and the man in front of her while waiting on a reply.  'Yes ma'am. This case is special to us. It's linked to many murder cases we have been following. I am hoping for full corporation can I be assure we will have that ma'am? Or do I need to go over your head.' "No sir, no need to do that. I will work with your agent and you'll have all our information. Thank you." She hung up with a disappointed sigh looking up at him with an annoyed glare. "Look here. I will work with you on this case, but it's my case. I am the lead. What I say goes. You may be a federal agent but I this is my town and we do things differently around here understood?" "Someone doesn't like having to share does she?" He said back at her demands making her growl low in her chest just enough for him to hear. "Understood detective." "Good and no you may not call me Scarlett. This is a strictly professional assignment and will be treated as such. Anything you need to say to me you can give to my partner Detective Ricardo.  Don't get in my way." She leaned back in her chair and sighed softly. He watched her closely every little thing she did like he was studying her and they sat in awkward silence for a moment.  "Understood Detective, so where are you on the case?"
