It was a double tragedy for the Okwe kingdom. Nwanamma the wife of Prince Akudo and Uloaku the favorite wife of Prince ubonwa were poisoned, but only Nwanamma survived. The kingdom also lost four men to kidnappers.
In those days, A king is usually buried with 7 people because they believed they would serve him in the next lif.
Unfortunately for the kingdom, their enemies disguised as people who also came to hear Uchayi's story.
And worse for her, her brother was among the missing persons. It was when they heard that the neighboring village were to do funeral for their king they understood what happened.
"You people can't let them take your young men like that. You have to do something." Ego begged her brothers Prince Akudo, Ikedi and obiako to go on a rescue mission for the kidn*pped men.
"I'm sorry we can't do that, we would have done the same if we were in their shoes". Prince Akudo snapped out Ego.
The incident had reshaped everyone, the whole kingdom were in a state of solemnity.
"Please we are talking about Uchayi's brother here" Ego begged "please let's help her".
"I'm sorry we can't do that Ego. Everyone of them is important, besides who is Uchayi. We can't help her". Prince Akudo said.
"You people are heartless". Ego said tearfully "This is cruel and you just want to allow it".
"Well we wouldn't have to be cruel if not for you" Prince obiak snapped
"How is that my fault"
"You still don't get it, do you? He dimmed his eyes and replied with a stern and calm expression
"Nwanamma is fighting to breathe. Ubonwa is just in great pains. These missing young men. You and your maids brought this upon us ever since you stepped your feet on that shrine. We couldn't handle the excess intrusions on the village because of some stupid story you has, you lured those girls to this. So if you are looking for whom to blame. Point at yourself." He hissed heavily and walked away.
Ego was left dowbfounded, he was right. She thought.
Ego came to see her mother for the last time before she traveled.
Agbomma was getting ready to leave for the farm that morning, she put a small hoe inside a basket and lifted it on her head. She was about leaving when she eyes caught Ego standing at her entrance.
"Bia nwatakiria, ogini ka icho we bia" "this child, what do you want" "Come inside at ones" Agbomma yelled.
Ego sluggishly came closer, she was looking all gloomy that morning.
"Ogini?" "What?" Agbomma snapped dropping back the basket she was holding on the floor. "I thought they said you have traveled to the future?" She said with a snide remark.
Ego scowled in disbelief "nne so you heard? and you never bothered to come see me. What kind of a mother are you?" Agbomma looked at her disdainfully "No wonder they pushed you out of the palace".
"Osino gini" she gave a mockery laughter "biko cho oche jere nodu ala, nkoyeli ka in ako" "Please go and sit down you are talking nonsense" Ego frowned. Agbomma tapped her chest with a stern expression "mua bu Agbomma, awa akwulu" " me the strong Agbomma" " Nobody chased me out. I left on my own".
" You lie nne" Ego snapped
"Biko I don't have the time to convince you. Believe it or shut up". Agbomma said
Ego replied "Even if you are saying the truth, What was your reason? For abandoning your own children? For leaving?".
Agbomma snapped "je zuo ike. mechie onu gi" "Rest, close your mouth".
"No no nne I wish to know"
"Fine if you must know. For you and your brother's good".
"Abandoning us was for our own good" Ego frowned in irritation.
"O yes" Agbomma replied "I don't know how to peacefully co exist with anyone and is not my fault. Yes. I didn't create myself. I love to cause problem. Did you hear I slapped your father's mother. Nne Ama wa Mia nti."
Ego clapped twice sarcastically on her face "well done champion of trouble. I heard everything you did" Agbomma was mute and solemn "I heard you fought everday and you eat and sleep troubles. I can't ask for a better mother and I am so proud of you".
Agbomma was sombre. She then said calmly "If I had stayed the palace would not have been as it is today. I didn't want you and your brother to grow in a divided home. And I didn't have the best behavior to raised you both right. So everything I did was for everyone's good".
Ego paused in sobriety. Agbomma snapped her fingers on her face to get her attention "nwatakiria ogini" " what this child".
Ego smirked arrogantly at her face, turned her back and walked off.
"What do you mean you don't know what to do about it?" Prince Ikedi yelled at Aluka.
He had gone to the shrine with his brother Prince Akudo to convince the chief priest to decline princess Ego's request.
"I can't do that" Aluka insisted.
"Why. Ezemmuo just tell me why. She doesn't know what she is doing. You know that". Prince Akudo blurted angrily.
Prince Ikedi affirmed "You know this. How do you think we will just fold our hands and watch you throw our sister away like that".
"It was her choice" Aluka snapped.
Prince Ikedi barked "You enabled it. All of this would not have happened if you didn't initiate it".
"So you blame me for her choice" Aluka said softly.
"Oh yes yes" .
Thet dragged on for some moments, dissapointed at their feeble attempt.. They stormed out of the palace.
Prince ubonwa wouldn't talk to anyone after the incident. There was no one to convince to stop her. They even paid Agbomma a visit to see if she would make princess Ego change her mind, but all their efforts was to no avail.
So they had to give in to fate.
