It was a harmattan season, the morning sun was getting almost visible, bringing warmth. The breeze was so fresh, blowing the leaves around.
Ego had come out early to work on the dress she has been making, her maids were yet to arrive.
"Ego" someone called from behind. Startled, she turned to see her cousin Ugogbe. She screamed in excitement, then ran to embrace her. Ugogbe is her favorite cousin.
They were very close until she got married.
"Ugogbe, I didn't know you were coming" Ego cried joyfully.
Ugbogbe laughed and said
"You know I wouldn't miss it for anything"
Ego hugged her again.
The ceremony is in two days and people coming from far have started arriving. Ugogbe just put to birth, no one thought she was going to come.
The ceremony was mandatory for all the Royalties regardless of where you are.
"How is your baby?" Ego asked inquistively.
"great. Come sister, I was just coming from the Obi. All your sisters have arrived. They said they haven't seen you since the came". Ugogbe told Ego
Ego interrupted in surprise "are you serious. I didn't know they were here. when did they arrive?".
Ugogbe laughed
"I just came. How would I know. I should be asking you".
Ego adjusted her dresses and followed ugogbe to see the princesses.
They kept talking on their way to the Obi.
Ego was tensed because she was to meet her step sisters. She maybe tough but she knew her sisters were more mean.
The older princesses have a haughty demeanor.
At times she wouldn't help but wonder how their husbands live with them.
They were all married to Royalties from different villages. Princess Ezinne is currently the Queen of Anowa village, not very far from their village.
She is known to be powerful and she has pompous attitude too.
Ugogbe laughed loud at Ego as she kept practicing how to approach the princesses when she met them.
That night was for performing the final rite prior to the ceremony which was to take place the next day.
Each family would plan on items to present at the ceremony for the rituals.
Prince Obinwa and Princess Ego sat together in Obinwa's hut to plan for their own family.
"I hate moments like this" Ego said and sniffed.
Prince obinwa was sitting on a mat, while Ego sat on a small stool next to him.
She wrapped herself in thick clothes because of the evening cold and occasionally rubbed her palm to feel warm.
"why do you hate moments like this?" Prince Obinwa asked inquistively.
Ego shrugged and replied
"because it reminds me that I'm left with you"
"Trust me, the feeling is mutual. Regardless, we still got mother" Obinwa said
"Then where is she?" Ego snapped. "where? others are with their mothers except us. She should be" expressing discomfort.
"Easy, it doesn't matter now" Prince Obinwa said
"Are you sure? because the last I checked. This our family passed as the most weird"
Prince Obinwa questioned with an officious gesture "Are we that bad?".
"Eh! we are bad ooo. Obinwa we are exactly what you think and what everyone thinks". She blurted .
"how?" he snapped
"Obinwa you are asking how? You once locked up a guard for days in a dungeon, without food nor water for just an honest mistake. More than half of the servants in this parents have tested your wrath. The fear you and are always on their feet when ever you are around. Our mother slapped the queen mother, our grandmother and left the palace, including her children. Like who does that? Then look at me. Do you even look at our home from the outside. I can imagine what people think about us" She counted.
Prince Obinwa gave a loud hiss at the end and added.
"We are just like every other families. Perfect" he said.
Ego looked at him in utter disapointment, stood up and said.
"I don't care what you plan but I am out of here. I need to retire to my hut, to my mat" she said and walks out.
Prince Obinwa only stared at her as she walked away, without saying a word.
Ego is a very difficult person to be with, they rarely get along and they fight a lot most times. But what so ever, he values Ego more than anything in this world.
