Rain hammered against Avery's bedroom window so hard it sounded like someone was trying to get in. Wind rattled the loose branch outside, making it scrape across the glass every few seconds. She couldn't sit still. She paced from her bed to the window, then back again, her phone clenched so tightly in her hand her fingers ached. Hospital called. Mom's having a rough night.
