MAYA: Panic. Dread. Anger. All three landed on me at once and I could not breathe past any of them. They took him. Someone had taken my son. My fingers curled into my palms and I stood there trying to hold myself together while my heart knocked so hard against my chest I could feel it in my throat. I kept holding onto the small hope that Chris was just somewhere nearby, playing, completely unbothered, the way he always was. But even that hope was getting harder to hold. And then the thought of Mason settled in. I hated that it had come to this, hated that he was the person I had to reach out to, but I picked up the phone anyway and pulled up his number. My thumb hovered over the call button for longer than I would like to admit before I pressed it. First ring. Nothing. Second ring.
