Woody much preferred driving the state-highway truck routes because he feared a high-speed accident if they were to break down on the interstate. But after they'd gotten the fan belt repaired, they'd done the math and figured out that being able to go twenty-plus more miles per hour would cut a day or so off their travel time to the coast. The obliging mechanic had even managed to get the A/C working again. The air didn't come out freezing cold, but at least they could keep the windows up and have a conversation, not that they often wanted to. Woody had even managed to extricate the cassette jammed in the tape player for ages, and they positively drowned in domestic bliss whenever they could pop in a Bonnie Raitt or a Delbert McClinton and crank up the volum
