CHAPTER 5
LENA
EXPOSED
"Alex?!" How did you get in here?" I inquired the moment I woke up from my long sleep and caught him sneaking into the dungeon. He crossed his lips with his index finger, which indicated that I should lower my voice. I understood the signs he gave me to keep quiet, but my inquisitive nature wouldn't let that happen. Instead, I yelled even louder. I was happy to see him and, at the same time, scared that he might get caught by the guards.
I peeked through an opening in the door when he had come in, and I saw the guards sitting right in front of the door, chattering to themselves. Alex helped himself to a seat, ignoring my many questions, "How did you manage to get in here?" I asked again, this time around, in a more inquisitive tone. He peered deeply at me as if looking for something in my eyes. "This is about Uncle Liam, my father." He muttered.
All of a sudden, my mood changed. What could have happened to Liam to warrant him staking his life in such a way? I just hope it wasn't what I was thinking. If he is here to beg on behalf of that greedy man, he had better leave before I pour out my aggression on him, I whispered to myself. I was frowning at him just because he made mention of Uncle Liam. Words can't describe how much I hated and despised that evil man. I could have strangled him a long time ago if I had the opportunity to.
"What about him?" I questioned, slowly hiding my frowning face as I turned back to face him. A smile played across his face and that got me even more upset; I didn't say anything funny, so I saw no absolute reason for the smile. Or was he trying to mock me?
I was already losing my patience. I had lost a greater part of it when he made mention of Uncle Liam. "I have a secret to tell you about him, you just have to relax." He explained, and I maintained my poise once again to listen to what he had to say. "You also have to promise me that no other ear will hear about what I'm about to say." I nodded my head in acceptance of his condition, I had no choice but to stick to it because I was eager to know what was in his mind.
"Uncle Liam is responsible for your death, and he planned to sell you off, but unfortunately for him, he had to hand you over to the King to fulfill his promises to him after the King assisted him in defeating those wild vargulfs. My ears seemed to deafen at the realization that my most hated enemy was Uncle Liam.
He had been the one all this while. Meanwhile, he pretended to be greatly sad by the news of their demise, taking me with him to his dreaded home to finish up what he started. "How did you find out?" I asked him, as I was not convinced that Uncle Liam could be mean to this extent. His response brought me to the realization that he knew about it but kept it to himself. No wonder he despised his father so much. "He is my father. What do you expect?" Well, yes he was after all!
"I am here not to add to your sorrows but to bring this to your notice and to also let you know that I have never been in support of his behaviors." He further stated, embracing me warmly, but I shrugged my hands away from his. He was beginning to irritate me and I couldn't just help it. "Go ahead with your reason for visiting," I yelled at him angrily. Even though I was aware that he wasn't in support of his father's actions, I despised him now for hiding them away from me all these years.
I was staring at him intensely, but my mind was far from what he was saying. I just wanted him to leave, I wanted to spend some time with myself alone. "Leave!" I yelled at him, and he threw me a surprised look, "Are you okay? I mean, why are you acting up all of a sudden?" Any more questions from him and I will scream to alert the guards. He looked like a traitor right now, and he was, he was just being overly nice to me because of his guilty conscience, which wouldn't spare him a moment of rest.
"I said you should leave! What part of that don't you understand?" My voice was louder, almost getting out of its peak. The guards rushed in to inquire what was going on, but they were shocked to find no one with me. "I thought I heard voices here." One of them inquired, while the other guards resorted to scattering the whole place in search of Alex. "Obviously! You heard voices. What were you expecting to hear? Cries?" I sounded rude to them, and I was aware of that; I now cared less about what they had in mind to do to me.
The guard attempted to unleash a blow on me, but he was stopped by another guard who had come out of the search for Alex. He held his hands firmly and they fixed their gaze on each other, ignoring me. "Courtesy demands that you never raise your hands to hit a woman." He muttered and dropped his hands aggressively. In the course of their misunderstanding, I caught Alex sneaking out from the back door; indeed, he was just as cunning as his father.
I could feel tiredness in the eyes of the guards as they had been searching for a long time now without finding anyone. Finally, they gave up on the search and headed towards the door. "My eyes are on you." A rugged-looking guard threatened as they walked out of the dungeon.
