Chapter threeAtalanta, walking across the Park, found herself moving more and more slowly towards the wood. She wanted to see Paul Beaulieu and at the same time she felt an inexpressible reluctance at having to explain to him what had happened. She told herself it was ridiculous that she should talk to him at all about what was entirely a private family affair and yet for some extraordinary reason she knew that she must tell him everything – a stranger whom she had not known until yesterday. She left Cicely early because she wanted to spend more time in the wood, only to find the butler waiting in the hall to inform her that the Countess wished to speak to her in her boudoir.
