Episode 6: The Mask of devotion

1129 Words
The blinding cascade of camera flashes felt like physical blows, but Amelia didn't let her smile waver for a single fraction of a second. As the heavy glass doors of the Greyvalley Crest lobby opened, a wall of sound hit them. Shouting reporters, thrust microphones, and the aggressive clicking of shutters filled the morning air. Karim’s arm was a solid, unyielding band around her waist, pulling her flush against his side. To the cameras, it looked like the passionate, protective embrace of a man deeply in love. To Amelia, it felt like being held by a beautiful, dangerous panther. Her heart hammered against her ribs, not from the media frenzy, but from the text message burning a hole in her pocket. The Moura dynasty is built on bones. "Smile, Amelia," Karim murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration against her ear that the microphones couldn't possibly catch. He leaned in, kissing her temple with practiced, agonizingly slow tenderness for the cameras. "Look at me like you’ve been waiting for this day your entire life." Amelia turned her head, forced her eyes to meet his dark, piercing gaze, and let out a soft, radiant laugh that looked utterly genuine. "I am looking at you, Karim," she whispered back, her voice laced with a hidden, icy edge. "And I am wondering exactly what kind of world I just signed my name to." Karim’s eyes narrowed slightly, detecting the sudden change in her tone, but his public mask remained flawless. He raised a hand to wave at the press, effortlessly guiding her through the sea of security guards toward the waiting black limousine. The chauffeur held the door open, and within seconds, they plunged into the profound, soundproofed silence of the armored vehicle. The moment the door slammed shut, the illusion shattered. Amelia immediately pulled away from him, sliding to the far side of the leather seat. She pulled her tablet from her bag, her fingers flying across the screen to lock the financial dashboards she had presented in the boardroom. She needed a distraction. She needed to anchor her mind in numbers because reality was becoming terrifyingly unstable. Karim watched her, his posture relaxed but his eyes intensely focused. He loosened his silk tie by a fraction of an inch, leaning back against the seat. The limousine pulled away from the curb, leaving the chaotic media circus behind. "You changed the moment we left the boardroom," Karim noted, his deep voice carrying a quiet weight inside the confined space. "Your smile was perfect out there, but your blood was running cold. What happened, Amelia?" Amelia didn't look up from her screen. Her analytical mind was already calculating the risk of confronting him. If she showed him the message, she would reveal that someone had a direct, compromised line to her personal device. But if she stayed silent, she was flying blind. "I am an economist, Karim. I analyze market trends and historical data before making an investment," she said, her voice cool and detached. "And it occurred to me that while I know everything about your current global liquidity, your historical portfolio is remarkably clean. Almost too clean." Karim let out a low, dangerous chuckle. "A clean record is a sign of a well-managed empire, Amelia." "Or a sign of an excellent cleaning crew," she countered, finally cutting her eyes toward him. She kept her tone conversational, masking her anxiety under a layer of professional curiosity. "For instance, your expansion into Europe began three years ago. Before that, the Moura Group operated almost exclusively out of North Africa. Specifically, Casablanca. You had a prominent corporate structure there, but the digital registry from that era is incredibly sparse. It’s as if an entire chapter of your corporate history was systematically redacted." The atmosphere inside the limousine shifted instantly. The temperature seemed to drop to zero. Karim didn’t move, but the subtle relaxation in his shoulders vanished, replaced by a rigid, lethal stillness. The calculating amusement in his eyes died, replaced by a dark, fathomless void. "You are a brilliant woman, Amelia," Karim said, his voice dropping into a register so low it was almost a warning. "But curiosity in a boardroom is an asset. Curiosity about my past is a liability. Do not dig into Casablanca." "Why?" Amelia asked, her chin lifting defiantly, her independent spirit refusing to be intimidated by his shadow. "If we are partners, if our bloodlines are legally merged, your liabilities are my liabilities. Did someone disappear, Karim? Did a previous business partner get in the way of your global expansion?" Karim leaned forward suddenly, his massive frame completely eclipsing the space between them. He didn't touch her, but his proximity was overwhelming, trapping her against the leather seat. His eyes burned into hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "Listen to me very carefully," Karim whispered, his breath teasing her lips, his voice tight with an unspoken fury. "We are in the middle of a war for the survival of Greyvalley Crest. The Vance Syndicate wants to destroy your family. My money is the only thing keeping your father out of a federal prison and your legacy intact. Focus on the enemy in front of you, Amelia. Because I promise you, you do not want to make an enemy out of me." He held her gaze for three agonizing seconds, letting the weight of his words sink in, before leaning back and looking out the window as the limousine sped onto the highway. Amelia’s heart was racing, but her mind was sharper than ever. Karim hadn’t denied it. He hadn't laughed off the accusation. He had threatened her—professionally, quietly, and effectively. He had confirmed that Casablanca was a graveyard. As Karim turned his attention to his own phone, Amelia subtly angled her tablet away from his field of vision. She bypassed her standard corporate firewalls and accessed a private, deep-web financial archive she used for tracking untraceable offshore accounts. She typed in the keywords: Moura Group, Casablanca, 2023, Dissolution. The screen loaded slowly as the limousine drove through the gray, mist-covered highway. Row after row of standard corporate filings appeared, completely sanitized. But Amelia’s eyes caught a broken string of code in a deleted maritime manifest from three years ago. She isolated the encrypted fragment and forced a decryption cycle. A single name materialized on the screen before the file automatically wiped itself from the server. Youssef Al-Alami. Chief Financial Officer, Moura Group Casablanca. Status: Terminated. Current Location: Unknown. Amelia closed her eyes, a chill spreading through her chest. The anonymous text message was right. Youssef Al-Alami hadn't just resigned; he had been erased from the corporate memory of the Moura dynasty. And now, she was married to the man who erased him.
