Episode11:An unexpected Ally

The heavy emerald silk gown lay discarded on the velvet armchair. Amelia stood in the center of her dark bedroom, wearing a simple black silk robe. The silence of the mansion was deep and absolute, broken only by the distant chime of the grandfather clock striking 02:00 AM. Her phone screen glowed in the dark. The proof is in the study behind the Moroccan mosaic. Amelia stepped out into the grand hallway. The polished marble floors were freezing beneath her bare feet. She walked like a ghost, her heart pounding against her ribs as she navigated the silent corridors toward the west wing, where Karim’s private study was located. She reached the heavy mahogany doors of the study. Her hand trembled slightly as she turned the brass handle. To her surprise, the door wasn't locked. She slipped inside, closing it silently behind her. The room was dark, illuminated only by the pale moonlight filtering through the high arched windows. Amelia scanned the walls, her analytical mind locating the beautiful, hand-painted Moroccan tile mosaic near the grand executive desk. She walked over to it, her fingers tracing the cold, geometric patterns, searching for a hidden seam or a latch. "You won't find the spring mechanism by pressing the center, Miss Amelia." Amelia gasped, spinning around instantly, her defensive instincts kicking into gear. Standing near the shadow of the velvet curtains was a young woman wearing the traditional uniform of the estate's staff. She looked about Amelia’s age, with sharp, intelligent dark eyes and a calm, reassuring expression. She held a silver tray with a pot of warm mint tea. "Who are you?" Amelia whispered, her voice tight with panic. "What are you doing here?" "My name is Maya, Miss Amelia," the girl said, stepping into the moonlight and setting the tray down on a small table. Her English was flawless, spoken with a soft, melodic accent. "Mr. Moura assigned me specifically to your wing. I noticed you didn't touch your dinner, and I thought you might need something to calm your mind." Amelia straightened her posture, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "Are you spying on me for Karim?" "If I were spying for Mr. Moura, I would have triggered the silent alarm the moment you left your room," Maya replied quietly, a subtle, genuine smile appearing on her face. "I am here because I know what it feels like to be trapped in a house full of shadows. And I know you are looking for answers about Casablanca." Amelia froze. "How do you know about Casablanca?" "I am from Morocco, Miss Amelia," Maya explained, walking closer and dropping her voice into a protective whisper. "I speak Arabic, French, and English. Before Mr. Moura moved his primary operations to Europe three years ago, I worked in his administrative office in Casablanca. I saw the files. I saw the names before they were deleted from the main servers." Amelia felt a sudden wave of relief wash over her. For days, she had been entirely alone, fighting an invisible enemy with no one to trust. Looking into Maya’s honest eyes, she made a calculated decision. She needed this ally. "The anonymous messages I am receiving mention an offshore account," Amelia said, trusting her instinct. "Something called the Al-Alami Foundation. It claims my father’s signature is on the files hidden behind this mosaic." Maya’s expression turned serious, a flash of fear crossing her eyes. "Youssef Al-Alami was a good man. He was the chief financial officer, and he discovered that someone was using the Moura shipping lines to move illegal, untraceable funds between North Africa and Greyvalley. He tried to document it, but he vanished. If your father's name is on those files, it means he was the one receiving the money on the European side." Maya stepped toward the mosaic, her fingers pressing a hidden, unpainted stone embedded in the lower corner of the wall. With a soft, mechanical click, a small section of the tilework slid back, revealing a modern, biometric steel safe hidden inside the stone structure. "The safe requires Karim's fingerprint," Amelia noted, her disappointment sharp. "We can't open it." "The digital logs are mirrored on his private laptop," Maya countered, looking toward the executive desk. "He leaves it here when he goes to the harbor. But the system is entirely in French and Arabic. Even if you copy the files, you won't be able to read the financial codes without a translator." "Can you translate them for me?" Amelia asked, looking directly at the young maid. "It’s dangerous, Maya. If Karim finds out—" "Karim is a powerful man, but he is not a god," Maya interrupted, her chin lifting with quiet determination. "Youssef Al-Alami was my cousin, Amelia. For three years, I have worked in this house, waiting for someone with the intelligence and the power to challenge the Moura dynasty. You are the first person who isn't afraid of his shadow. I will help you." Amelia reached out, taking Maya’s hand. The warmth of the human connection felt like a lifeline in the middle of a freezing ocean. "Thank you, Maya. Tomorrow, when Karim leaves for the corporate headquarters, we make our move." Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study clicked. Maya instantly grabbed her silver tray, stepping back into the shadows as the door swung open. Karim stood in the doorway, his broad frame blocking the light from the hallway. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket, his white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, looking incredibly imposing in the dim light. His dark eyes swept the room, immediately locking onto Amelia standing near the mosaic, and then onto Maya in the corner. "What is happening here?" Karim demanded, his deep voice vibrating with a dangerous, quiet authority. "Miss Amelia was restless, sir," Maya spoke up instantly, her voice perfectly submissive as she bowed her head. "I brought her some mint tea to help her sleep." Karim stared at Maya for a long, suffocating moment before waving his hand dismissively. "Leave us." Maya bowed again, giving Amelia a brief, imperceptible look of reassurance before slipping past Karim and closing the doors behind her. Amelia stood her ground, wrapping her silk robe tightly around herself as Karim stepped into the room. The distance between them vanished as he walked straight toward her, his presence instantly consuming the air in the study. "You are a long way from your bedroom, Amelia," Karim murmured, his eyes dropping to her bare feet before rising to lock onto her face. "And you don't look like a woman who came here just for tea." "I find your house suffocating, Karim," Amelia replied coldly, her analytical mind quickly creating a cover story. "I needed space to think. The gala was overwhelming, and your threats from dinner are still ringing in my ears." Karim stepped closer, his large hand reaching out to capture a stray lock of her dark hair, his fingers brushing against her cheek. The touch was electric, a sudden burst of heat that made her breath hitch. "If you want space, you can walk in the gardens," Karim whispered, his dark eyes burning with an intense, possessive heat that felt entirely different from his usual business focus. "But do not enter my study without me, wife. I have told you before—there are things in this room that can destroy the world we are trying to build. Go back to bed." Amelia didn't pull away from his touch, her eyes defying his command. "Are you afraid of what I might find, Karim?" "I am afraid of what might happen to you if you find it," he said softly, his voice dropping into a dangerous, dark melody before he released her hair and stepped back. Amelia turned and walked out of the study, her mind sharper than ever. She had an ally now. She had Maya. The countdown to discovering the truth about Casablanca had officially begun.
