I had come here to find a bride.
Beside me sat Tulsi Uncle—our village ghotok (matchmaker)—as we drank tea at a small roadside stall for breakfast before heading toward the girl’s house.
After finishing our tea, Uncle led me there.
The moment we entered the courtyard, I noticed a young girl sitting on a khat, quietly stitching something with complete focus. The sound of our footsteps made her look up briefly. Startled, she immediately called for her father before lowering her gaze again.
Her father came out and welcomed us warmly inside.
The elders soon became busy talking among themselves. He asked about my work, my family, and other usual matters. During the conversation, he mentioned that she was their eldest daughter.
A little later, she returned with tea for everyone.
She barely spoke while serving us, but my eyes unintentionally paused at her hands.
Long, slender fingers.
Delicate and calm.
For some reason, seeing those hands quietly holding the tea tray filled my heart with unexpected peace.
I think… at that very moment, I had already chosen my bride.
Soon, all five of her mamas arrived and began questioning me from every direction possible. By the end of the long discussion, the eldest mama finally nodded in approval for the marriage.
Then I made an unusual request.
“I would like to see her palm once.”
Everyone looked confused by my sudden words.
Tulsi Uncle almost choked on his tea.
I cleared my throat and explained calmly,
“I believe in astrology and palm reading. Hands reveal a lot about a person’s nature. People with short, heavy fingers are often more aggressive, while long slender fingers usually belong to calm-minded individuals. I simply wish for a peaceful household.”
Though still surprised, they eventually agreed.
When I finally looked at her palm closely, I quietly read the lines for a moment before lifting my gaze.
And there, in front of everyone—
I gave my final yes to the marriage.
