McCall and Steel spent most of the afternoon at the Hamptons club talking to over-privileged, under-stimulated, middle-aged women. The club itself was a large building of sandstone and glass, a testimony to nineteenth-century architecture. The place was swarming with brashly dressed women whose only lot in life appeared to be to drink and talk trash about one another. The interviews were endless and pointless because nobody actually knew anything. However, the self-satisfied matrons all thought they knew everything.
