Aching Secrets

~AMARIS The echoing vibration of my voice hung in the air like a physical cloud of dust, turning the white walls of the room into a suffocating, soundless vacuum. The frantic yammering and the playful smiles that had filled the room a second ago dissolved instantly. Ember went entirely still, her body freezing mid-stride as she held a crystalline evening dress against her chest. Her fingers slowly uncoiled from the hanger, letting the fabric slip through her hands and tumble carelessly onto the floor. Her eyes blinked in raw, unadulterated shock, her jaw dropping slightly as she stared at me as if I had just spoken a completely different language. She took a slow, deliberate step toward me, her breathing turning remarkably thin. “What?!” Ember said, her voice dropping into a barely audible whisper that carried the sharp friction of absolute disbelief. I stood up from the velvet mattress, my hands clenching into tight, defensive fists at my sides to stop the violent shaking of my fingers. Now, Ember and I were face-to-face, the raw gravity of the truth sitting right between us in the quiet space. “Yes, Ember,” I said, my voice cracking slightly under the pressure of the unshed tears burning behind my eyelids. “The tension outside that door had absolutely nothing to do with love or a romantic spark. It was because we recognized each other. He is the exact same man I left Oakhaven to heal from. He is the ex who cheated on me, broke my spirit, and discarded me like I was worth absolutely nothing.” Ember stood completely paralyzed for a long, agonizing beat, her mind frantically scrambling to process the devastating pieces of the puzzle. The realization that the brother she had spent ten years weeping for was the exact monster who had ruined her best friend’s life smashed into her reality with a crushing weight. “And now he's here in Iron-Howl… living under the same roof with you,” Ember said, her voice trembling as the sheer irony and horror of the twist settled into her chest. She turned around blindly, her legs buckling slightly as she sat heavily on the edge of the bed, her hands flying up to clutch at her hair as she processed the full weight of the trauma. I sat down beside her, the elegant silk duvet shifting beneath our weight as the silence between us grew thicker, heavier, and completely suffocating. The thudding of my heart was a frantic, uneven rhythm against my ribs, a low, familiar rattling behind my collarbone reminding me that the Silver Decay was watching this entire breakdown from the shadows of my core. Then, Ember slowly turned her head, her eyes softened by a deep, protective sorrow. She reached out, placing her warm hand directly over mine, squeezing my icy fingers with an unyielding strength. “You know what?” she whispered, her gaze locking into mine with a fierce intensity. I shook my head weakly, unable to find the breath to speak. “Gray lives in this mansion, but he doesn't exist to you,” Ember said, her tone hardening into a definitive, unbending vow. I swallowed hard against the dry lump of ash in my throat, my chest heaving as I tried with everything inside me to force back the tears threatening to spill over my lashes. I nodded, trying to accept her declaration, but the sheer emotional trauma of the morning was too much to contain, and finally, a single drop of a tear tricked down my flushed cheek. Ember quickly raised her hand, holding my face gently, and wiped the tear away with the smooth pad of her thumb. “He is my brother, and this is his home now,” Ember continued softly, her voice carrying a maternal grounding that I desperately needed. “The pack protocol states that he has every right to stay here, but all you need to do is act like he doesn't exist. Ignore his presence, ignore his words, and do not let him take a single step into your sanity. I am your shield here, Ama.” I nodded again, but her profound loyalty only made the burning guilt of my other secrets twist like a knife in my stomach. More and more tears dropped from my cheeks in a hot, continuous downpour, my composure completely breaking. Ember pulled me tightly against her chest, wrapping her arms around my shaking shoulders to comfort me, letting me weep into the fabric of her outfit while the world crashed down outside the locked door. A few minutes later, right after the storm of my grief finally passed and I pulled away from her embrace, cleaning my damp cheeks dry, a sudden, heavy knock came on the mahogany paneling. My survival instincts scratched into action instantly, a sharp jolt running across my veins. I stood up quickly to go get it, desperate to keep Ember from seeing the frantic panic still lingering in my eyes. I walked over to the entryway, my feet gripping the floor as I pulled at the heavy brass door knob. Willow was standing there in the corridor. Her gray-streaked hair was tied back in its usual immaculate bun, her dark blue maid uniform perfectly pressed. But she wasn't carrying cleaning supplies. In her hands, she was holding a protective garment bag containing a breathtaking, high-end designer dress made of rich crimson silk, and resting right on top of the fabric was a sleek box containing a pair of impossibly expensive custom heels. Willow bowed her head slightly, her face locked into a detached, professional mask that betrayed absolutely no emotion. “The Alpha sent this to you, Madam,” Willow said, her steady voice echoing clearly into the room behind me. I froze completely on the threshold, the blood in my veins turning to absolute ice as a sudden, suffocating panic seized my throat. My eyes widened in pure, unadulterated terror as I stared at the royal-crested box and the shimmering silk. “Me?” I stammered, my voice coming out dangerously thin, a cold sweat breaking out across the back of my neck. “Yes, madam,” Willow answered smoothly, her eyes tracking the frantic shift in my expression. “He explicitly stated that it is for the grand celebration of his son's return tonight. You are expected to wear his colors.” A blind, horrifying dread slammed into my chest. I hesitated, my hand trembling violently as I slowly reached out and accepted the heavy weight of the garment bag and the shoes, the forbidden, frostbitten pine scent of Alpha Varg’s touch still faintly radiating from the tissue paper wrapper. “If you need anything, please call me, Madam. I'm at your beck and call.” I barely nodded. The lock clicked shut as Willow bowed and retreated down the service corridor, leaving me standing alone in the center of the entryway, completely pinned by the crushing weight of the delivery. My mind fractured into a chaotic spiral of pure terror as I slowly turned around to face the bedroom. What the f**k was I going to tell Ember now? What would my absolute best friend think about her poor, factory-working outsider friend receiving a custom, impossibly expensive designer dress and luxury shoes directly from her severe, unbending father? Alpha Varg didn't give gifts to guests. He didn't care about the comfort of strangers. This wasn't a gesture of hospitality…this was a territorial, possessive command from a fated mate who had just f****d me bare on the bed sheets hours ago. Ember was sitting on the edge of the mattress, her head slowly snapping up as her eyes locked onto the royal-crested emblem stitched into the garment bag, the protective sorrow on her face instantly hardening into a sharp, piercing suspicion. The trap was closing, the secrets were overlapping, and the sheer weight of the truth was about to blow the entire mansion sky-high.
