We had scoured the city, but there had been no sighting of Skol. Mama Sanaz had been inconsolable, another recipient of Mama’s elixir to calm her. No one had slept much and when the sun rose, a sombre quiet had descended over not only Daro, but the whole of Zamee.
Eli coordinated the shifting of the remaining villagers into the city walls. We were no longer safe. We had been betrayed by our own. No matter how little I thought of Uncle Skol, I still didn’t expect him to sink so low. Emmet and Nesta had had wolfsbane in their wine, enough to knock them out cold.
Queen Elena had left with a large guard to take Mae back to her home. Leela was still inconsolable, holed up in her chambers. No one trained today.
