The cold wind swept through the trees, whispering secrets through the leaves as Selene made her way deeper into the heart of Shadowfang territory. Kaden’s presence lingered in the air like an invisible thread, tying her to the past she had tried so hard to escape. Yet, no matter how much she tried to sever the connection, the pull of fate was undeniable. Her son, Tiberius, was the only thing that kept her grounded. He was her reason for everything—her strength, her vengeance, her redemption. The bond between mother and child was unbreakable, and Tiberius had inherited more than just her blood. He carried with him the legacy of the Alpha bloodline, a truth that Selene knew would change the course of everything. Kaden had rejected her, but he would not be able to turn his back on their son. As she moved through the dense forest, her thoughts flickered back to the years she had spent away from the pack, raising Tiberius in secret. She had chosen to leave, not just to escape Kaden’s rejection, but because she had known that the world they lived in would never accept her—especially with the power she was beginning to unlock. Her wolf had grown stronger, more powerful with each passing year. The mark of the rejected mate no longer held her down. The bond that had once been a source of shame had become her greatest weapon. It was time for Kaden to see the woman she had become—the one who had learned to fight for herself, for her son, and for the future she would carve out of the broken pieces of the past. The familiar scent of the pack’s territory filled her senses—rich, earthy, and tinged with the distinct musk of wolves. But amidst the forest’s natural scent, there was something else. Something more... distinct. It was a fragrance that made Selene’s stomach twist in unease, a scent that she had not expected to encounter here. Her breath hitched as the unmistakable scent of a female wolf grew stronger, carried on the wind. A rival. She knew the pack had many wolves, but there was only one who would dare to cross her path now. The Alpha’s new mate. Selene’s jaw clenched, a flash of fury rising within her. Kaden had replaced her so easily—so casually—and it had been one of the hardest things to accept. But the thought of another woman in his arms, of her claiming the position that had once been hers, filled her with a rage she could barely contain. The female wolf was close, closer than Selene had expected. Her footsteps were light, yet purposeful, as if she knew exactly where Selene was. Slowly, Selene turned, her eyes narrowing as a tall, lithe woman stepped into the clearing before her. The woman was beautiful, with long silver hair that shimmered in the moonlight, her eyes glowing a vibrant green. She was an Alpha in her own right, her aura commanding and dominant. "Selene," the woman spoke, her voice smooth, almost mocking. “I didn’t expect you to return.” Selene’s gaze hardened, and her lips curled into a cold smile. She could feel the power radiating off this woman, but it didn’t faze her. She had learned long ago how to stand her ground. “And I didn’t expect you to still be here,” she shot back. The woman’s green eyes flashed with something between amusement and irritation. “I see you haven’t changed. Still holding onto your pride. Still clinging to a past that’s long gone.” She took a step closer, her posture predatory. “You may have run away, Selene, but you’re still nothing in this pack. Nothing but a ghost of the past. Kaden has moved on.” The words hit Selene like a slap, but she held her ground, her eyes not leaving the woman’s. “I’m not here for Kaden, and I’m not here to beg for his approval,” she said, her voice steady. “I’m here for what belongs to me—what you and your precious pack have stolen.” The woman smirked, her eyes glinting with challenge. “Is that so? And what exactly is it that you think you can take from us? You, who are nothing but a weakling, a rejected mate. You’re a ghost of the past, and you can’t change that.” Selene’s eyes narrowed. She could feel the tension in the air, the challenge in the woman’s stance. This was not just a chance encounter. This was a test. A challenge for dominance. “I’ve changed more than you could ever imagine,” Selene said, her voice low and deadly. “And I’m not the one who should be worried.” The woman stepped forward, her smile turning into something more predatory. “We’ll see about that.” Before Selene could react, the woman lunged, her movements swift and graceful as she aimed for Selene’s throat. But Selene was ready. Her instincts kicked in, and she sidestepped, grabbing the woman’s wrist and twisting it behind her back in one fluid motion. The woman let out a yelp of surprise, but Selene didn’t let go. She pressed her knee into the woman’s back, pinning her to the ground. “Don’t mistake my past weakness for your victory,” Selene hissed, her breath hot on the woman’s ear. “I’m not here to play games.” The woman struggled beneath her, but Selene’s grip was unyielding. “You don’t belong here, Selene,” the woman spat. “You never did.” Selene’s grip tightened, her anger flaring. “No. You don’t belong here.” With a swift motion, she shoved the woman off, sending her stumbling to the ground. “I don’t need to prove anything to you.” As the woman scrambled to her feet, Selene stood tall, her chest heaving with the rush of adrenaline. She could feel the power coursing through her veins, the wolf inside her roaring with triumph. This was no longer about Kaden. This was about her. About reclaiming the power that had always been hers. The woman glared at her, her eyes filled with fury, but there was a flicker of respect in them now. “You’ve changed,” she muttered, brushing herself off. “Maybe there’s more to you than I thought.” Selene nodded once, her expression hardening. “Don’t forget it.” Without another word, the woman turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving Selene alone in the clearing. The tension from their encounter hung in the air, but Selene was undeterred. This was only the beginning. As she continued her journey deeper into Shadowfang territory, she couldn’t help but wonder if Kaden was watching from the shadows. If he had seen her strength, seen the woman she had become. Would he recognize her now? Would he understand the power she had unlocked, the fury she carried within her? It didn’t matter. She wasn’t here for him. She was here for Tiberius. The moment she laid eyes on her son again, everything would change. The time for vengeance had come. And Kaden’s world would be turned upside down. Because this time, he wouldn’t be the one calling the shots. This time, Selene would be the one to take what was rightfully hers. And nothing—not even the Alpha—could stand in her way.
