The moon hung high in the sky, its silver light bathing the land below in an ethereal glow. Selene’s heart raced as she finally stood at the edge of the familiar clearing—Shadowfang’s heart, the territory that had once been home to the pack. Everything looked different now. The towering trees, the dense underbrush, the mountains in the distance—all of it was just as she remembered, but with an unfamiliar sense of foreboding. Her steps were measured, slow, as though each one weighed heavily on her chest. She could feel the tension in the air, could almost taste the memories that had haunted her for years. This was no longer the place of dreams, nor the place of hope. It was the place of her scars. Tiberius, her son, was close now, and his presence offered her both a sense of peace and a reminder of the storm that was about to break. They would face Kaden together—no longer the rejected mate and the ruthless Alpha, but a mother and child, forged in the fires of betrayal. The packhouse loomed ahead, its darkened windows staring back at her like the eyes of an old enemy. The place where she had once stood, loved, and dreamed was now the place where she would challenge her fate. The wind shifted, bringing with it the scent of wolves—the unmistakable stench of Shadowfang. But it wasn’t just the pack she could smell. There was something else in the air, something new, something… familiar. Her pulse quickened, and she instinctively lowered her gaze, tightening her grip on Tiberius’s hand. He had inherited her instincts—the same sensitivity to danger, the same sharp awareness of their surroundings. “Mom,” he whispered, his voice carrying the weight of someone far older than his years. His amber eyes locked with hers, and for a moment, the world around them seemed to still. “Are you ready?” Selene nodded, squeezing his hand gently. “I’m ready.” They began their approach to the packhouse, and every step felt like a drumbeat in her chest. She could hear the distant sounds of wolves howling, their mournful calls echoing through the trees. The pack had no idea what was coming for them. As they neared the entrance, a figure appeared in the doorway—tall, broad-shouldered, with the unmistakable air of authority. Kaden. For a brief moment, Selene’s heart skipped a beat. Her breath caught in her throat as their eyes locked. He hadn’t changed. His dark, commanding presence was just as strong as it had been all those years ago, but there was something in his gaze now—something that Selene hadn’t seen before. Recognition. And guilt. Kaden’s eyes flicked down to Tiberius, and for a moment, time seemed to freeze. The world seemed to hold its breath as the two of them stared at one another. Selene could feel the weight of Kaden’s gaze on her son, his confusion palpable. “Selene,” Kaden said, his voice rough, as if he hadn’t spoken in ages. “I didn’t think you’d ever come back.” Her heart twisted, but she forced the pain down. This wasn’t the time for emotions. This was the moment for power. “I never left, Kaden. Not really,” she said, her voice steady and firm. “But I had to leave the man who didn’t see me for what I was.” Kaden’s jaw tightened at her words. He glanced at Tiberius again, his eyes lingering on the boy, a flicker of something unreadable passing through them. “Is this…?” His voice trailed off, his eyes widening in realization. Selene’s lips curved into a bitter smile. “Yes. This is your son.” The words hung in the air like a thunderclap, the weight of them crashing down on both of them. Kaden stared at her, his breath hitching. For a long moment, he didn’t move, didn’t speak. Selene could see the wheels turning in his mind, the pieces falling into place. He took a step forward, but Tiberius moved in front of Selene instinctively, his stance protective, his wolf already awakened by the presence of Kaden. The tension in the air was palpable, thick with years of unspoken hurt. “Stay back,” Tiberius said, his voice low, a growl just beneath the surface. Kaden stopped in his tracks, eyes narrowing in suspicion. He glanced at Selene, his gaze filled with disbelief. “You’ve been raising him all these years… in secret?” Selene’s eyes never left his. “I didn’t have a choice. You made sure of that, remember?” Kaden winced at her words, his gaze falling to the ground as if he could no longer meet her eyes. Selene could feel the raw emotions pulsing between them, the years of unspoken pain and regret. But she didn’t want to feel sorry for him. She couldn’t afford that luxury. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Kaden asked, his voice low, almost pleading. “I could have—” “No,” Selene interrupted, her voice cutting through the air. “You couldn’t have. You wouldn’t have. You rejected me, Kaden. You rejected us both.” There was silence for a long moment, the weight of her words settling over him like a heavy shroud. Kaden’s shoulders slumped, as if the realization of his past mistakes were finally crashing down on him. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Tiberius growled low in his throat, still standing guard in front of Selene. “I don’t trust him.” Selene placed a hand on her son’s shoulder, grounding him. She didn’t blame him. She had spent years raising Tiberius to be strong, to trust no one but her. But now, he would have to understand that Kaden was not just the man who had rejected them—he was their Alpha. “I don’t trust him either,” Selene said softly. “But we have no choice but to face him.” Kaden’s gaze flicked between them, the weight of his decisions pressing down on him. “What do you want from me, Selene?” She stepped closer to him, her voice steady but cold. “I want everything. I want what’s mine—what you stole from me. I want my rightful place.” Kaden’s face hardened as he met her eyes. “You think you can just walk back into my life and take everything? You think I’ll just hand it over to you?” Selene took another step closer, her eyes locking onto his with a quiet, unyielding power. “I don’t need you to hand it over. I’m taking it.” The silence between them was thick with tension, the air crackling with energy. Kaden’s eyes searched her face, as if he were looking for something—something he had lost. His lips parted, but before he could speak, Tiberius stepped forward. “No more talking,” Tiberius said firmly. “You’ve had your chance. Now it’s time to show us what you really are.” Kaden’s gaze softened as he looked at his son, and for the briefest of moments, Selene saw a flicker of something deep inside him—regret, guilt, and perhaps, just perhaps, the realization that the future was no longer in his hands. “Let’s see if you’r e right,” Kaden said quietly. And with that, the storm between them began.
