Dayna was clearly onto her, although she did try to dismiss it as much as she could. Most girls at the bank crushed on Edward. He was the big boss, taller than Richard, more classically handsome, more important, and sociable - the charismatic king of a bank empire.
Nobody noticed Richard, the other heir, or they only did when they realized that Edward would never give them the time of day, but to Alice, it was so much different. Richard had something else about him…something that set him apart. She had the feeling that he’d suffered much, way more than what she knew or he had told her. Yet he took life with a pinch of salt and was still capable of genuine kindness and humour. Unlike his brother, life had not blessed him with a golden sword of popularity and good health, but when he spoke to Alice, he might as well be the only man in the world.
She loved her job but found herself numerous times looking forward to meeting him by his car at the end of the day and spending some more quality time with him. There was so much she wanted to know about him and his opinions. Alice wanted nothing more than to see that quirky smile again and, in between daydreaming, chatting to Dayna and actually working time went by fast.
Waiting for Richard in his car in the empty carpark, Alice was concerned as there seemed to be no signal. Maybe he was caught in a meeting and she should call a cab…she had waited until everyone left to come down so as to avoid people seeing her going down to the executive parking space, which only had a handful of car parking spaces used by family members or VIP clients.
No sooner had she finished her thoughts than the lift doors didn’t open and sure enough, stylish in his coat and briefcase, Richard walked towards her with a smile.
“Fancy meeting you here, milady.” He grinned, making Alice giggle.
“Indeed, kind sir. I await my chariot to take me to my castle.”
Clicking his car key, he opened the door for her and made sure she was safe inside before closing it and climbing into the driver’s seat and turning on the ignition. He switched on the local radio on low volume and asked Alice how her day went.
“Not bad at all, actually. I don’t get lost so much and am getting used to people.”
“So, you’re settling down okay?” he said, turning to look at her before putting his eyes back on the road.
“Oh yes, Dayna has been a godsend, introducing me to people and guiding me on the job. I think I made a new friend here.” Of course, she was not going to mention that Dayna mentioned her crush on him, his ego would swell to the size of a mountain and she felt embarrassed.
“I saw you sitting with her in the cafeteria. It’s good that you have people to talk to, it makes things 10 times easier even on the job. Listen, are you hungry?”
“Starving, what did you have in mind?”
“Do you trust me enough to let me cook for you?”
Alice feigned reluctance, tilting her head and pursing her lips. Richard picked up on it and gasped in fake offence before bursting into laughter.
“Of course I trust you, what do you feel like making? Maybe I can help!”
“How about veal in wine?”
“Sounds like heaven!” she said before turning her face to look at the window, smiling. She could get used to this.
