Engagement highlights

There he was, standing at the top of the stairs, the eyes of the man that I wanted but could never have. The man who wouldn’t acknowledge me in any regard. He didn’t look away and neither did I “Say yes” The cheers got louder, “say yes, say yes”. All eyes were on me, including the eyes I didn’t want on me. Why did he choose this club today of all days, what perfect timing Onika was literally the happiest in the room. Her grin went from ear to ear. Didn't we just have a conversation a few weeks back and the whole time she was lecturing me about how me and Dave are such a mismatch and just because we had dated for 4years it doesn't mean we are meant to be; how are you smiling this much right now girl. Dave also seemed to be enjoying this... I mean for a guy who can’t make me experience the big O he was smiling like he had won a prize. “Say yes, say yes” everybody kept yelling and I mean everyone. Think fast mia, think fast. The words “No” sat at the edge of my tongue, cameras, phones, smiles where all in my field of vision. “Yes, yes” I said shyly. I had to. “Yes I’ll marry you!!” We would have this discussion privately and I'm gonna kill Nikki, she's being too happy and a little heads up would’ve been nice. With a sly kiss on the lips and an awkward hug the s**t show of an engagement was finally over. “Omg congratulations,” M—onika ran towards me, Lucy and Teressa, who were also invited, ran towards me all hugging me, taking pictures of my hand trying to get professional photos of what's now known as my engagement ring. “Babe you good? You seem off. My boyfriend,” f**k, no—, my fiancee said. “I’m okay baby, I'm just really surprised and kinda over stimulated right now. I really am trying to process all this.” “Its gonna be alright honey,We should call my parents,” he added “Babe we could do that later— or not.” He was already on FaceTime with his Fam, and the screaming started again. I'm happy, I love my boyfriend. Are we less adventurous than we were when we started dating? For sure, but who cares, not me. Is the s*x progressively getting worse and boring? Of course, but who’s noticing. The crazy boy who fought a 12th grade boy for me when we were only 10th graders. The boy who ran to the store to get me tampons when my period started while he was walking me to my dorm in college and proceeded to send me a period care pack the next day. The guy who took my virginity in our sophomore year of college and who I was literally obsessed with over the years. How did I lose this much love for him? And this wasn’t just about what happened with Raf, somehow we’ve just been losing the spark as a couple. “Babe say hi, it's your Mum.” “Oh hi mum.” “Let me see the ring M—“ she said excitedly. “Congratulations baby, where’s the ring? Honey!” She said, referring to my dad, “the lines breaking, come quickly, Mia’s been proposed to, I’m on the phone with Dave.” “Mum hello, can you see it,” I said, stretching my hands to the front camera, “hello, mum.” “Babe please end the call, I’ll call her when i get home, the wifi's probably broken again.” Eating, drinking and partying ensued while I tried to act unbothered. However, I was very bothered. The music got louder, beats climbed, vibrating through my chest until it felt like my thoughts weren’t mine anymore, and everyone was caught up in their own little world but I was already so overwhelmed and needed some fresh air. I quietly slipped out when no one was looking. Stepping outside the club, there he was, getting his key from the chauffeur and was about entering into his Bentley. The anger in me surged like I had been waiting for this moment and I stormed towards him. My heels hit the pavement harder than they should have, my hands were shaking when I reached him, my fingers curled into my palms and my nails pressed into my skin just to steady them. “This is how you play your little games right?” “You look for girls, act vulnerable and needy, f**k them and act clueless.” He turned around and saw me. My raging eyes pierced at him. His shoulders tightened. “Go inside Mia.” “No! no Rafiah, You don’t get to tell me what I can or can’t do. You don’t get to act like you didn’t make me feel the way I did, or like I imagined things. You don’t get to f**k me and ghost me. You don’t get to pretend—“ my voice cracked. “You don’t get to pretend and act like I imagined it being more than it was. Rafiah, listen to me…” “No!, you listen to me” His eyes were shooting out and glaring at me with disbelief. His jaw tightened. “I go to the office you’re there, the one place I would think you shouldn’t be on a weekday, where I came to unwind and clear my head, Somehow here you are.” “Oh, so you do agree that something happened between us, and you remember it enough to want to hide from me?” Something in his expression shifted. Anger, frustration, maybe both. “Congratulations Mia—Look, you’re engaged, Act like it.” He opened his car door, looked at me like he was about to say something—but he didn’t, he got into his car and sped off. “f**k you asshole,” I yelled “Mia!”I heard a voice call out, “what the f**k was that about?” Without turning around I already knew whose voice that was. “Could this night get any more complicated?” I muttered.
