David Salinger sat on one side of the mahogany table. He looked like he hadn't slept in forty-eight hours. His suit was rumpled, his tie was askew, his eyes were bloodshot, and he radiated a vibration of pure, exhausted stress. He had spent the last two days dealing with lawyers, bail bondsmen, and his father screaming that Ella had "ruined the family name" over a pearl necklace.
