The wedding of David Salinger and Natalie Sterling was designed to be the social event of the season. It was held at the Sterling estate, on the sprawling lawn overlooking the lake. No expense had been spared—mostly because Natalie had charged it all to credit cards she expected David’s VP salary to cover eventually. The ceremony was slated to begin just as Louise arrived, making her entrance dramatic, if unintended. She slipped quietly into a seat near the back, observing the scene unfold.
