ADELINE
“ Mr Archer, just sign the papers and let’s be done with this.” I hissed and glared at him. “Sign it.” I repeated, fighting the urge to back down as I met his gaze, Instead I wrapped my arm over my chest.
His woody cologne invaded my senses the moment he leaned in closer. What was he doing? He tilted my chin upward, his touch much gentler than I expected. My heart thumped in my chest when he wouldn’t let go, when he leaned even closer.
I sucked in a breath, frozen in place. What was he doing? I wanted to push him off, lean back. My mind was willing but my body wasn’t having it. Even as his hand slipped from my chin down my neck, as he tightened his grip a little, I didn’t move. I couldn’t. Not when blood rushed away from my brain the moment he closed the distance and took my lips with his.
I stilled. Gray-Mr Archer was kissing me. Mr Archer was kissing me and in public too. We never even hugged before and he was kissing me.
I wanted to fight it, but the louder my brain screamed at me to end it, the harder my heart thumped in my chest, urging me to live in the moment. It won. I gave in and let him deepen the kiss. Heat unlike anything I’d ever felt spread across my skin, every time his lips moved over mine, it intensified till till nothing else matter except the feeling his touch evoked.
He broke the kiss but didn’t move away, his forehead rested on mine, his eyes danced with fire, fire that I knew would burn me if I let him.
“You’re still my wife, divorce papers or not. Stop embarrassing yourself for pennies.” It was like a bucket of ice was tossed over my head. How could I have let that happen?! Of course he was still the same man that ignored me and treated me like I was trash for five whole years. A man too pompous to admit that I saved him a lot of trouble and time by being a decent person to Johnny when even his own mother couldn’t be.
All the accusations, the slander, the utter disregard for my person, it all came flooding back. And I poured it all into that one single moment. I didn’t even realize what was happening till my palm met his cheek. I slapped him. I slapped the Grayson Archer. s**t.
His face swerved to the opposite side from my palm. He remained still for a minute, a long one. Did I slap off his brain? Add one more screw to the collection of loose screws in his head?
“I’m so-” I began to say reflexively, not because I was sorry but because I didn’t know how else to take back what I had done, publicly.
“Don’t apologize.” Aaron cut in.
That got Grayson’s attention, he turned so fast, his eyes flared in anger. The craziest thing was his anger wasn’t even directed at me, but at Aaron. Oh no.
“He was being an asshole and you finally put him in his place.” He smiled at me, but for the life of me, I couldn’t find it in me to return the gesture. I had even forgotten he was still seated across from me.
“Are you just going to sit there and let your date speak to your husband like that?”
“Ex. Ex husband.” Aaron cut in again. “I’ve listened to you yap and quite frankly, I’ve gotten bored because anyone with ears can tell she doesn’t want you, she wants a divorce.” He definitely had a death wish.
Grayson spared a slow, unimpressed glance at Aaron, his gaze cold like he wouldn’t mind cutting off his tongue for speaking. He took slow, deliberate steps towards him and I lost the ability to breath, preparing for the absolute worst. He stopped exactly two steps away from Aaron. In a cold voice, “Well, right now he still has my name attached to hers and you’re just temporary entertainment.”
He didn’t give me anytime to process what he just said to Aaron before tossing me over his shoulder and my head wasn’t to his backside either, but his front!
“Let me go!” I hit his thigh, done trying to be civil, if he was going to act like a wild animal, I was going to treat him like one! Cool air slapped against my exposed thigh as I struggled to get free, “Let me go!” I yanked the hem of the dress down and grunted when it rode back up the next second.
“Hey! let her go.” Aaron called from behind us, but again, Grayson ignored us both, instead, he headed straight to the door. Cool air brushed passed my thigh again and red heat spread across my cheeks. I yanked the dress down again , but I knew whoever was behind us, whoever we walked passed would get a good view of my too thick thighs, including Aaron. God I hated Grayson!
The security guard who had opened the door for me earlier glanced between Grayson and I in confusion, but if Grayson noticed, he didn’t care because he just brushed passed him and into the chilly night.
“I swear to God if you don’t put me down this insta-”
“What?” He lowered his head slightly, a dare played in his eyes, “What would you do exactly?”
“I would, I wou-Agh! Just let me go, Grayson!” I yelled, hoping some of the people on the street trouping passed us would reconsider.
He huffed as he all but tossed me into the back seat of his car. He c****d a brow at me, “What happened to Mr Archer?”
“Just let me go. You wanted me out of your life, now I’m out, sign the papers and it would be final.” I forced, meeting his gaze like my chest didn’t feel painfully tight doing so.
“I’m not sign-” He thundered, his eyes widened the next second like he just realized he had been yelling. A few people had began to gather, a little far off from the car, but I knew they were watching, he knew it too with how rigid he suddenly became. “I’m not signing any stupid paper!” He dragged out in a strained voice, like it took everything not to yell it in my face. Well, he should have tried that before interrupting my date!
“You would! I’m done with being treated like a freaking ghost. Time is up, just sign the freaking papers and lets be done with it already!” I ranted like a crazed woman. Maybe I was. Maybe he had finally succeeded in driving me to the point of madness, whatever it was, it wasn’t done. “We’re done. I know it and you should too. You never cared what I did with my time before, so you don’t have any right to be now!” I kept going, not caring that I sounded maniacal.
I pushed up from the seat and tried to shove passed him and that was it. He snapped. “Get your ass back in the car.” He dragged, blocking my path. White flashes glared from the corner of my eyes, but I couldn’t care less.
“No.” I huffed, “I have an amazing man waiting for me inside, move out of the way so I can get back to my date.” I balanced a hand on my hip, daring him to do his worse. And that he did.
“Enough of this s**t!” He grumbled. He grabbed me by the waist for the second time that night, but unlike before he wasn’t shoving me over his shoulders, he was shoving me into the back seat.
“Grayson what the hell?!” I snapped, but all of it fell on deaf ears. He slammed the door behind him and his driver floored it like they planned it beforehand.
