### Chapter Seven: *Shattered Illusions*

946 Words
The day began with chaos. Every major news outlet buzzed with stories about Dominic Volkov’s empire, the words *“corruption”* and *“illicit dealings”* thrown around like fuel to a firestorm. The leak was no longer a whisper in the shadows—it was front-page news. Images of Dominic’s properties and bold headlines detailing anonymous claims spread like wildfire. In his penthouse office, Dominic stood rigid, his jaw clenched as he read through the damning articles on his tablet. Each word felt like a calculated strike against his carefully built empire. Anton entered the room, his expression tight. “We’ve traced the leak,” Anton began, his voice low. “It’s tied to Viktor’s network. He’s pulling strings, but it’s messy—we might be able to spin it.” Dominic didn’t reply immediately, his mind racing. Viktor’s move was bold, brazen even. But the calculated attack wasn’t just about his business. Viktor had started this war to challenge him, to unseat him—and now, it seemed, to target Lily. That thought struck a nerve deeper than Dominic cared to admit. Meanwhile, Lily arrived at Dominic’s office, summoned once again with no explanation. She had seen the news; the allegations swirling around Dominic’s empire were impossible to miss. She debated whether she should even go, but a strange mix of curiosity and concern propelled her forward. When she entered, she was greeted by tension so thick it felt suffocating. Dominic stood by his desk, his back to her, radiating barely contained fury. Anton shot Lily a wary glance before excusing himself, leaving her alone with Dominic. “You’ve seen the news,” Dominic said without turning around. His voice was sharp, like glass. “Yes,” Lily replied cautiously. “Is it true?” He turned then, his gray eyes flashing with a mix of anger and something else she couldn’t quite name. “That depends on who you ask. To my rivals, I’m the devil. To my allies, I’m a savior. Which do you think is closer to the truth?” Lily hesitated, but she refused to back down. “I think the truth doesn’t care about labels. It’s just the truth.” Dominic moved closer, his towering presence filling the space between them. “You’re naïve to think it’s that simple.” “And you’re arrogant to think you can keep everyone in the dark forever,” she shot back, her voice rising. “Whatever this is—this game you’re playing—it’s going to destroy you.” His smirk was sharp and humorless. “It’s not a game, Lily. This is survival.” “Then why involve me?” she demanded, stepping closer. “Why keep dragging me into your mess when I’ve done nothing but try to help you?” For a moment, Dominic said nothing, his gaze locked on hers. Then he exhaled, the tension in his shoulders easing just slightly. “Because you see things no one else does. And because I don’t trust anyone else.” The admission caught Lily off guard. It wasn’t exactly a compliment, but coming from Dominic, it felt like one. Still, her frustration bubbled over. “Trust isn’t one-sided, Dominic. You can’t keep hiding the truth from me and expect me to help you.” “I’m not hiding,” he said, his voice low. “I’m protecting you.” The words sent a shiver through Lily, but before she could respond, Anton re-entered the room, his expression grim. “Viktor’s making moves,” Anton said. “He’s hosting a private event tonight—invited half the city’s elite. Word is, he’s using it to plant more seeds against you.” Dominic’s jaw tightened. “Then we’ll go. If Viktor wants a show, we’ll give him one.” Anton hesitated. “And Miss Morozova?” “She’s coming with me,” Dominic said firmly, his gaze flicking to Lily. “If Viktor wants to make this personal, we’ll show him exactly what that means.” -- Later that evening, Lily found herself swept into a world she barely recognized. Dominic arrived to escort her to Viktor’s event, his demeanor as cold and sharp as ever. His hand rested lightly on her back as they entered the opulent venue, a subtle yet possessive gesture that didn’t escape Viktor’s notice. Viktor greeted them with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Dominic,” he said, his voice smooth as silk. “And Miss Morozova. What a pleasant surprise.” Lily felt the tension between the two men immediately, their polite words laced with barbs. She stood at Dominic’s side, trying to make sense of the unspoken battle playing out in front of her. “Quite the gathering,” Dominic remarked, his tone icy. “Though I imagine the real entertainment is yet to come.” Viktor chuckled, his gaze sliding to Lily. “You’ve chosen your company well, Dominic. Miss Morozova is... intriguing.” Lily bristled at the way Viktor’s eyes lingered on her, but Dominic stepped in before she could respond. “She’s not part of this,” Dominic said, his voice like steel. “Leave her out of it.” “Ah,” Viktor said, his smile widening. “Protective, are we? How uncharacteristic.” The exchange left Lily feeling like a chess piece in a game she didn’t fully understand. But as the evening wore on, she began to see the cracks in the facade—both in Dominic and in Viktor’s calculated charm. Secrets were unraveling, and she was at the center of a storm far more dangerous than she’d realized. --- ---
