He knew that Elle had worked hard to get where she was and that Kara was her mentor. He had no ill will toward her for it, but he assumed that Elle and Kara would remain on the same team. He clenched his hands, trying not to think about Kara. He failed. All it took was one slip of his mind, and then it was like she was all around him. He could smell her, almost taste her. He heard her laugh, saw the spun gold of her hair glittering in the light. He took a deep breath and held it for a few seconds, banishing her from his mind. She had never come to see him. She must have moved on to other things, and she no longer needed him. He was hurt and confused over much of it. None of that mattered, though, not really. He would not force the issue if she didn’t want to see him. It was time to tack
