Chapter 5

Spencer POV “None of us are exempt from the mating pull.” Uncle’s voice droned on and on, his rant about mates was the best remedy if you had insomnia. My lids were already dropping. “You will all do stupid stuff because your only focus will be on your mate, being with her, or him, but more importantly, protecting her and keeping her safe.” My sister sighed dreamily from the chair next to mine. Almost making me gag. "Uncle, why haven't I found mine yet?" She whined, her hands cupping her cheeks, elbows resting on the plastic table in front of us. "You are too young!" My father barked, although, as usual, her tone was softer. It happened every time he spoke to Melissa. Dad, from his spot next to uncle Mirko, intervened from time to time during the lecture on mates. “I'm not, dad! I am 24 years old!" "Exactly! You are still a child!" Uncle Mirko let out a deep chuckle as Melissa snorted. "If it's any consolation, I haven't found mine either." I grinned at her pout, ruffling her hair. “Spenc! No!” She complained, swatting my hand away. “Don't ruin her hair, Spencer! It took your mother a long time to make those braids!" Dad scolded me. He was the gamma of the pack, and best buddy/ brother of Uncle Mirko. Many members of the pack, or other packs, were terribly afraid of him. I was quite amused by it and I often used it in my favor. "Yes, Mom did it. Not you.” I smirked, placing my hands behind my head, “Because you haven't learned how to do it correctly yet." Dad winced, knowing I was right. No matter how hard he tried, he could never braid Meli's hair properly. His brutish fingers were cumbersome. Uncle Mirko turned to the side, probably so as not to be seen grinning. "Okay…. If we're done here," I stood up, slapping my thighs, "Lisa is waiting for me..." “We are not. Sit." Uncle ordered, blue eyes and posture emitting authority that had little effect on me. "Lisa again?" Dad squinted at me, "She's not your mate." "So what?” I shrugged, yawing loudly, “We are in an open relationship until we find the mate. Besides, Uncle Mirko screwed a lot of girls before he found Aunt Elena-" Dad smacked me on the back of the head, making me wince. "Don't talk like that in front of your sister!" I rolled my eyes, rubbing the back of my head. They always treated my sister like a porcelain doll in a crystal case. And she loved it. Sure, I loved Melissa and will give hell to anyone who hurts her, but still! “As I was saying, when you find your mate,” Uncle continued, unphased, "You will get into fights with your best friends because they talked to your mate without you being there.” Dad chuckled, eyeing uncle subtly, who glared back at him for a second. Probably something that happened to them. Probably because of a similar situation that had happened to them when they were young. “Every time that she or he glances at another male or female, you will feel the need to beat the absolute s**t out of him to show her your strength and superiority to that other male. Or female. If others smile at your mate, you will once again want to beat the absolute s**t out of them to wipe that smile off their face and let them know that she is yours and only yours." Booooring!! I gazed at the blue sky. I could do somersaults with Lisa right now. Man, I deserved it! I worked hard all week, drove my sister around as her personal chauffeur — as dad didn't allow her to drive around alone, and went shopping with mom twice. Twice!!! And mom would take hours and hours, while she dragged me into every shop that existed in town and beyond. But no, all that wasn't enough! I had to hear another lecture on mates. On a freaking Friday! Mates here, mates there. It was everything that uncle and dad talked about… like they expected us to find ours soon. I was indifferent to the idea. My ideal was to live in the moment and think of the future later on. Despite all the talk about love at first sight, passion, constant erections, murderous jealousy and yadda yadda, I was sure no she-wolves would beat the explosive s*x I shared with Lisa. There were no comparisons. “You will zone out while talking to your pack members because you catch a glimpse of your mate, something may remind you of her/him and you will feel compelled to find out where she is and if she is ok.” Dad continued with a small smile, “You'll be overbearing and get on her nerves. None of this can be helped," Sure, dad! We all know you are a freak with mom! “All of this is normal, so when you get those feelings, you need to take a deep breath before you actually do anything physical. A low growl will generally make the other male or female back down." Uncle Mirko added with a grin, showing a hint of fangs. My head turned to the side at a noise. I saw the heir of Black Alpha walk out of the forest, sweat dripping from his bare chest. My cousin always appeared like that, making a small noise on purpose, for us to detect him. To have time to prepare for his arrival. His looks weren’t necessarily scary, if you could raise your chin up enough to stare at him in the eye. Which I could, obviously. It was the aura that he emitted that cause faints and screams wherever he went. Raven, the Betas’ adopted daughter, followed suit. She was also sweating in her sports clothes. They must have gone hunting or training together. Her purple-dyed hair was pulled back into a stiff ponytail, her dark eyes sparkling with excitement. Everyone had hoped they were mates ... Yet they weren't. I chuckled to myself. She had a huge and unbearable crush on Archie when she was a kid and throughout her teenage years. It got so ugly that as a child she'd punched and kicked any other girl that talked to him. "Hey Mel," Archie said softly, smiling down at Melissa. He leaned down and kissed her cheek. She beamed at him, “Where were you?” “Hunting.” He murmured before glancing at uncle, "Dad, can I talk to you for a moment?" His voice was deep, raspy. Uncle Mirko nodded, following my cousin into the woods. Raven followed them with her eyes and moved to join them, but Archie, without turning around, whispered, "Not now, Rave". He glanced at her from over his shoulder, "I’ll see you later." "Oh, sure. Will you come to mine?" She said hopefully, her eyes gushing with affection. Archie nodded, once, as Mirko placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled tentatively at Raven. Then two Alphas disappeared, devoured by the trees. I looked at dad and smirked, “Wanna see a picture of Lisa’s t**s?”
