Chapter 10 – Shadows and Sparks The lights died with a crackling hiss, plunging the suite into thick darkness. For a heartbeat, silence reigned—except for Aria’s own sharp inhale. The air felt charged, heavy, like a storm waiting to explode. Somewhere behind her, she could hear footsteps… slow, deliberate, dangerous. Her fingers trembled as she reached out in the dark, brushing against the edge of a velvet sofa. “Damon?” Her whisper cracked through the air. No answer. Only the faint hum of electricity trying—and failing—to return. Then, out of nowhere, a hand caught her wrist. “Don’t move.” His voice—low, commanding, unmistakably Damon’s—sent a rush through her chest. Relief flooded her for a second—until she realized his grip was iron-hard, and his body was tense. “Damon… what’s happening?” she asked, barely breathing. “Someone was here,” he murmured. “Someone shouldn’t have been.” Before she could reply, a flicker of emergency light flashed across the room—just enough to reveal a shattered window. The cold wind whipped through the space, tossing her hair like wild silk. Damon moved fast, pulling her against his chest, his other hand reaching for the gun hidden inside his jacket. His heart was pounding hard enough that she could feel it. For a moment, the world narrowed to just the sound of his heartbeat and the warmth of his body against hers. Then came another sound. A soft click. Metal on metal. Someone was still inside. --- Aria’s throat went dry. “We need to get out of here,” she whispered. “Not yet,” Damon said, eyes flicking toward the hallway. “Whoever came here knew the security codes. That means it’s someone close.” Her pulse throbbed. “You mean… someone from your staff?” His jaw tightened. “Maybe. Or someone who thinks they can outsmart me.” The emergency lights flickered again, and for half a second, she saw it—a silhouette reflected in the glass wall across the suite. Tall. Masked. Watching them. Before Damon could move, the shadow vanished. He cursed under his breath. “Stay behind me.” But Aria didn’t listen. She stepped closer, trying to see who it was, her curiosity outweighing fear. The next thing she knew, a shot cracked through the silence—glass exploded—and Damon’s arm wrapped around her, pulling her to the floor. Her ears rang. Her body shook. But Damon didn’t let go. When she opened her eyes again, she saw his face inches from hers, his breath ragged, his eyes blazing with something fierce—protective, primal, desperate. “You could’ve been killed,” he growled. She whispered back, “And you could’ve been too.” For a moment, the chaos around them faded. All she saw was him—his jaw tight, his hair disheveled, his scent surrounding her like something sinful and magnetic. Then, without warning, he leaned closer. Their lips almost touched—almost—before he pulled back, exhaling roughly. “This isn’t the time,” he muttered, standing up and checking the hallway again. But Aria could see it. That moment wasn’t about fear—it was about something neither of them wanted to admit. --- Minutes later, the lights returned. The suite looked like a crime scene—broken glass, wind sweeping through, papers scattered. Damon tapped his earpiece. “Lock down the entire floor,” he ordered his security team. “Whoever was here—find them before they leave the building.” When he turned back to Aria, his tone softened. “You’re hurt.” She looked down—her arm was bleeding from a small cut. “It’s nothing,” she said. He reached for her hand anyway, his fingers brushing gently over her skin. “Don’t tell me what’s nothing, Aria.” The tenderness in his voice made her heart twist. For the first time, she saw something raw in his eyes—something that wasn’t control or arrogance. “You’re shaking,” he whispered. “So are you,” she murmured back. Their eyes met again, the distance between them shrinking. She could feel the pull—the kind that felt like gravity, inevitable and dangerous. He leaned in closer, his breath warm against her ear. “Next time someone tries to touch what’s mine,” he said in a dark, velvety tone, “they won’t get a second chance.” Her breath caught. “Yours?” He hesitated for a long second. Then his thumb brushed against her lips—slowly, deliberately. “You know what I mean.” The air between them burned. --- Later that night, after the chaos settled and security confirmed the intruder had escaped, Damon stood by the window, staring into the city lights. His reflection looked like a stranger—half in shadow, half in firelight. Aria approached quietly, wrapping a shawl around her shoulders. “You should rest.” He didn’t look away. “Rest isn’t an option when someone’s trying to destroy everything I built.” She stepped closer. “You’re not alone in this, Damon.” That made him turn. His eyes softened for the briefest moment. “You don’t even know what you’ve walked into, Aria. My world isn’t kind.” “Then maybe it’s time someone brought a little kindness into it,” she said, voice trembling but sincere. He stared at her like she was the first real thing he’d seen in years. Then he smiled—slow, dangerous, devastating. “You really don’t know what you do to me, do you?” Her heart fluttered. “Maybe you should tell me.” He took a step forward, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off him. “I could,” he whispered, “but you might not survive it.” Before she could answer, his phone buzzed sharply. He glanced down—and the color drained from his face. “What is it?” she asked. He showed her the screen. It was a photo. A live feed—from one of his hotels. The message underneath read: “You can’t protect her forever, Damon.” Aria’s breath hitched. He clenched his jaw, rage flashing in his eyes. “It’s started,” he muttered. “And this time… it’s personal.” ---
