The man walked towards her and stood in front of her. "Are you my blind date?" He asked, his voice cool with a deep baritone that left Clara a bit surprised.
Clara stared at him, a bit puzzled, trying to figure out where she had seen him in the past.
"Excuse me, are you my date?" The man asked again, clearing his throat and hoping that she was. He wished to get this over with and return back home as soon as possible, he had a gala to attend.
Clara realized she had not replied to him, she quickly fixed her expression gracing him with a faint smile. "Yes I am."
The man nodded and took a seat, his gaze swiping over Clara. He didn't expect his date to be this beautiful and yet fierce looking at the same time.
"I am Lucian Throne, what about you?" Clara heard the man say.
"Clara Laurent." She said briefly, not in the mood to have an actual conversation. She hoped she would not have to keep this up for much longer.
"Let me cut to the chase. I was not interested in this date, because it did not feel promising. But after seeing you, I have an offer for you." Lucian muttered, cutting to the chase.
The only reason he agreed to this blind date was to finally get his mother off his neck. From the look of things, his blind date didn't wish to be here either and he had no desire to prolong their date.
He would cut to the chase, if she was in then that would be good, if not, then it would be another date wasted.
Clara's ears perked up at his words, was he about to tell her the cliche stuff about having a woman that he loved and not being willing to marry her?
She had made that excuse numerous times on her previous days, so she would not be surprised to hear that now. Unfortunately, she couldn't say that anymore.
Clara hummed, indicating for him to go ahead with his words.
"Marry me." Lucian muttered, gazing at Clara without a blink. His eyes were pinned on her, hoping he could compel her to his wishes.
"What?" Clara asked, wondering if her ears were playing a trick on her.
She waited for him to correct him but he looked as though he wasn't joking. "Are you joking?" Clara asked, glaring at him.
"Marry me miss Laurent. From what I can tell, you do not appreciate being put up on blind dates, nor do I. Since we have found ourselves in this conversation, why don't we get married instead and get rid of the constant dates?"
"It's a solution for both of us, Miss Laurent. If we get married, no more dates."
"Is that your reason for wanting to get married?" Clara asked, a bit in disbelief. This has to be the most absorbed thing she has been hearing since she was born.
"Yes."
"Then you are absolutely wrong. Marriage is a foundation between two people who love themselves." Clara remarked.
"Then what is the essence of the blind dates our families keep sending us on? People like us, Miss Laurent, do not have the privilege of falling in love."
"Even though we fall in love, we end up being used by the person we love and we are turned into a vessel to attain things." Lucian muttered calmly, sparing a glance at his watch.
Clara scorned in disbelief.
"If you do not understand what I mean then, you should try figuring out why our parents only set us up with people from our circles." Lucian added, his expression neutral and cold.
Clara couldn't say anything he made sense with his words. Whatever he was saying, was true. That was the truth and deep down in her heart, she knew it was the truth.
Lucian placed his hand into his breast pocket, bringing out his business card. He placed it on the table and pushed it towards Clara.
"Here is my business card, contact me if you consider my terms. I will take my leave now." Lucian muttered, standing up on his feet and excusing himself from there.
Clara stared at him as he walked away, her eyes following his back till he was out of sight. Her eyes shifted to the card in front of her, staring blankly at the card.
"I am so sorry for keeping you waiting Miss Laurent. There was traffic on the way here." A man muttered, standing in front of Clara.
Clara looked up, her gaze falling on the man. His tie was crooked, his suit jacket crumbled and his hair wet from the rain. From where she was sitting, she couldn't see his shoes but she knew they were dirty as well.
"You are?" Clara asked.
"The date you have. Your mum set up a blind date with mine." The man muttered, taking a seat.
Clara mouthed an 'o'. So if he was on a blind date, then who was the one she just met?
That was unimportant right now, as she was exhausted already. "Please excuse me, I will take my leave now. I am so sorry for the inconvenience." Clara muttered, picking up the business card and rushing out of there.
Clara got into her car and sat there, not driving away for the first ten minutes, she was busy contemplating Lucian's words.
With a reckless thought, Clara picked up her phone and typed in his contact number from the business card.
Clara wished she didn't have to make such a decision, but the betrayal she had witnessed earlier today left her in a dilemma.
She texted him:
"Hi Mr. Throne. Clara Laurent here, let's get married. Whenever you are ready."
Clara contemplated sending it but pressed send regardless, she was not going to let the past hold her back. She had found a man she wanted to marry and so she would.
"Marry me tomorrow." She texted him again, hoping he would get her text message.
