CHAPTER 7 — Too Close to Stop

658 Words
Her breath was still uneven. His fingers still resting lightly against her arm. And neither of them had moved. Not away. Not closer. Just… stuck. Right there. In something neither of them could explain anymore. “This is where we stop,” she whispered. But her voice didn’t match her words. Too soft. Too uncertain. His gaze didn’t leave hers. “Then stop me.” Her heart skipped. Because she knew— She couldn’t. Didn’t want to. And that was the problem. Her fingers loosened slightly around her bag. Then tightened again. Like she was fighting herself. Like she was losing. Slowly. His hand shifted— Just slightly— From her arm to her wrist. A small movement. But it sent something sharp through her chest. Her breath caught instantly. “You’re doing it again…” she murmured. But she didn’t pull away. Didn’t even try. “Doing what?” His voice dropped. Closer. Warmer. “Making it hard to think.” That was the truth. The only truth left. Because right now— Thinking was impossible. His thumb brushed lightly against her wrist. Slow. Deliberate. And her reaction was immediate. Her fingers tightened around his sleeve this time. Not pushing him away— Holding him there. That changed everything. His gaze darkened slightly. Not control anymore. Something deeper. Something more dangerous. “You keep saying you should leave,” he said quietly. Her heartbeat pounded louder. “I know.” “But you’re still here.” Her lips parted slightly. No answer. No excuse. Because there wasn’t one. Only the truth. And it was standing right in front of him. His hand moved again. From her wrist— Up. Slowly. Brushing along her arm like he had all the time in the world. Like he was testing something. Or maybe— Waiting. Waiting to see if she would stop him. She didn’t. Her breathing grew uneven again. Her eyes dropping for a second— Then lifting back to his. And that look— That was enough. His other hand moved to her waist. Firm. Steady. Pulling her just a little closer. Her body reacted instantly. No hesitation this time. No pause. Her hand pressed lightly against his chest— But it wasn’t to push him away. It was to feel him. To steady herself. Or maybe— To lose control completely. “This is a mistake…” she whispered. But her voice was barely there. He leaned in closer. “So why does it feel like you don’t want it to stop?” Her heart pounded harder. Faster. Because he was right. And she hated that. She hated how easy it was to forget everything else when he was this close. How her thoughts disappeared. How her body answered before her mind could catch up. “Say it,” he murmured. Her breath caught. “Say you want me to stop.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. Her fingers curled slightly against his shirt. Her lips parted— But no words came out. Because she couldn’t say it. Wouldn’t say it. And that was all he needed. He closed the distance. Kissing her again. This time— There was no hesitation. No holding back. Her response was instant. Her hand gripping his shirt tighter as she leaned into him fully now. No space left. No pretending. His hand at her waist tightened slightly, pulling her closer as the kiss deepened. Slower. Stronger. Like neither of them was trying to escape anymore. Her thoughts blurred. Her heartbeat loud. Her breath uneven against his. Everything felt sharper. Closer. Too close. And yet— Not enough. When they finally pulled back— It wasn’t far. Just enough to breathe. Just enough to look at each other again. And this time— There was no denial left. No distance to hide behind. Only the truth they hadn’t said out loud yet. And the way neither of them was walking away. Not this time.
