Yana or rather, Karen’s soul in Yana’s body, stared at the phone screen in panic, her trembling hand touching the unfamiliar face reflected in it.
“It can’t be… I’m dead. Paul… Dante… They killed me.”
The horrifying memories of that night came flooding back like a nightmare. Karen remembered clearly the pain of her last breath being squeezed, remembered clearly Paul’s emotionless eyes as he took her life. But now, she was still breathing, still feeling the beat in her chest, even though it was no longer her body. The door to the hospital room opened, a nurse walked in, smiling:
“Oh, you’re awake! Are you feeling dizzy or uncomfortable?”
Karen now Yana, looked at the nurse in confusion. She wanted to ask so many things, but her throat was so dry that she couldn’t speak. The nurse continued:
"I'll call the doctor to check on you again."
"Wait..." Karen tried to speak, her voice was so unfamiliar that it startled even her. It was no longer her old voice.
"Do you want to ask something?"
Thousands of questions swirled in Karen's head, but she knew that if she acted too unusually, something bad would happen. She swallowed hard, trying to stay calm.
"My accident... what? I... what happened to me?"
The nurse sighed, her expression slightly troubled.
"I heard you had a traffic accident while running away from a group of people. The police arrived at the scene but haven't been able to investigate much yet."
"Run away...?"
Just then, the door to the hospital room opened again. A group of men in black suits walked in, their faces cold and dangerous. Walking between them was a middle-aged woman, wearing a red silk dress, holding a pearl rosary in her hand. She slowly walked towards the hospital bed, her sharp eyes looking down at Yana.
"Looks like you're not dead yet." Her voice was cold.
Karen felt a chill down her spine. She didn't know who this woman was, but her intuition told her that this was a dangerous person.
The woman crossed her arms in front of her chest, tilting her head to observe her.
"You haven't forgotten, have you, Yana? You borrowed a large sum of money from me to pay for your mother's hospital bills, but you still haven't paid it back. And now, you dare to play the game of running away?"
Karen was stunned. Yana borrowed money to save her mother? She curled her lips into a sneer.
"It's a pity your mother isn't here to see you in this miserable state."
A man stepped forward, roughly snatched the phone from Karen's hand, and checked the messages.
“There’s no sign that you’ve earned the money to pay off your debt.” He looked at Mrs. Omey, shrugging. “Maybe we should teach her a lesson.”
Karen felt her heart pounding. If she didn’t do something, they wouldn’t leave her alone. She couldn’t die again. Karen tried to control her fear, her hands gripping the bedsheets. Mrs. Omey and the men surrounded her like wolves waiting for their desperate prey. Taking a deep breath, Karen looked straight into Mrs. Omey’s eyes, trying to appear calm:
“I don’t have the money right now, but I’ll work to pay off my debt. Whatever it takes, I’ll do it!”
Madam Omey laughed, a sarcastic laugh. She turned to her underlings, curling her lips in mockery:
"Did you hear that? She said she would do anything!"
The people behind her also laughed sinisterly. One of them spoke up:
"Then what else is there to say? A girl like her, just needs to put on a little makeup and she can make a ton of money. It's much easier than doing manual labor."
Madam Omey rested her chin on her hand, looking at Karen with interest:
"I don't have time to argue with you. The best way to make money quickly is to go out and entertain guests. I have many rich partners, they really like young, sensible girls."
Karen shuddered when she heard that. Her heart pounded, her whole body froze. She couldn't do it. She couldn't! She quickly knelt down, tears welling up in her eyes.
"I beg you! Please don't make me do that! I'll do anything else, just be merciful!"
Mrs. Omey raised her eyebrows, her eyes cold as if considering. The surrounding men burst into laughter, seemingly enjoying the sight. But then, Mrs. Omey raised her hand, signaling silence. She slowly walked closer to Karen, bent down, her voice low but full of authority:
"You say anything, right?"
Karen nodded like crazy, there was no other way. At least she was alive, she would figure out everything else later. Mrs. Omey stared at her, then suddenly laughed.
"Fine. I have a proposal."
She turned back, signaling a man to bring an envelope of documents.
"Remi, my son, ran away with his lover. He owed me a lot, but before he left, he made a promise: To atone for his sins, he would go to Edward's mansion and work as a bodyguard, receiving all his training."
She looked at Karen, her lips curling dangerously.
"But it's not here anymore. You'll replace it."
Karen's eyes widened, her heart sinking when she heard the name Edward. "Edward..." She didn't know who he was or what kind of person he was in the underworld, but in this world, one had to be cold-blooded and brutal to survive. So Karen guessed that he was also a scary person that made others wary. He was not only rich but also cruel, no different from Paul. But compared to being sold into prostitution, this option was still a way to live. Karen clenched her fists, taking a deep breath.
"I agree."
Mrs. Omey smiled with satisfaction.
"Good. I hope you don't disappoint me."
Karen knew that she had just signed a deal with the devil. But at least she still had a chance to change her fate. Karen walked out of the hospital surrounded by strong men. Her hands were still shaking with fear, but she tried to stay calm. “I can’t die. I have to live.”
The shiny black car stopped right in front of the hospital, the door open. A big man pushed Karen into the car, then quickly closed the door. Mrs. Omey sat in the front seat, arms crossed, her eyes still as cold as ever.
“I’ll take you home to pack your things now. From now until we get to Edward’s Asinla mansion, I’ll keep a close watch on you. Don’t do anything.”
Karen nodded, not daring to object. The car rolled, gliding through the familiar streets of the city. Karen’s heart was heavy. Was she really going to go there? Would she live in a mansion full of danger, next to someone like Edward? Although she was confused, she knew that she had no other choice.
30 minutes later, at Yana’s apartment. Karen was pushed inside, two strong men stood right at the door, not taking their eyes off her. Mrs. Omey sat down on the sofa, took out a cigarette, lit it and took a long drag.
"You have 15 minutes to pack. Only bring what is necessary."
Karen took a deep breath and quickly walked into the bedroom. She opened the wardrobe and pulled out a few simple clothes, all of which were women's clothes. She was stunned. No way. If she appeared at Edward's mansion as a girl, she would definitely be exposed immediately. Karen turned around and walked out of the room, looking straight at Mrs. Omey:
"I can't go there as a girl. Otherwise, Edward will find out that I'm not Remi."
Mrs. Omey raised her eyebrows and squinted her eyes slightly:
"So what do you want?"
Karen swallowed, mustering up her courage and said:
"I want to cut my hair short and wear boys' clothes. I have to completely transform into Remi."
Mrs. Omey laughed and clapped her hands in delight:
"This kid has a brain. Fine."
She turned to one of her juniors:
"Take him to get a haircut and prepare some men's clothes for him." Karen breathed a sigh of relief. At least she could hide her true identity.
An hour later. Karen looked in the mirror. Her hair had been cut short, the long, soft hair had disappeared, replaced by a masculine undercut. Her face was originally small, her features delicate, now without long hair, she looked more like a young boy than a girl. She wore a simple outfit: a black hoodie, dark jeans, sneakers. Karen's figure had completely disappeared, replaced by Remi. She clenched her hands, starting from today, she was no longer Karen, she was Remi. But at that moment, she suddenly remembered Ivy. She had to call her sister, warn her about everything. Karen hurriedly pulled her phone out of her pocket, but...
Swoosh!
Mrs. Omey quickly snatched it away.
"Do you think I'm stupid? I know who you're going to call."
Karen panicked:
"Give it back! Just a minute! I need to talk to my sister!"
Mrs. Omey curled her lips, waving the phone in front of Karen like a toy:
"Forget it. I'll keep this. When you get to Edward's mansion, I'll give it back."
"No! You can't do that! Please!"
Mrs. Omey didn't care, just glanced at her and turned away.
"You're not allowed to contact your relatives until you do your job well."
Karen clenched her fists, her heart aching. Ivy, her sister... She couldn't protect her now. But she would come back, somehow, she would protect her sister. Even if it meant giving up everything.
The car rolled on the empty road, passing through tall buildings and sparse woods, heading towards the outskirts of the city. Karen, or rather Remi, sat with her hands tightly clasped to her knees, feeling uneasy in her heart.
Finally, before her eyes appeared a majestic and imposing mansion with a towering iron gate. On the gate was the symbol of an eagle spreading its wings, looking majestic and terrifying. They had arrived at the Asinla mansion. The car stopped. A man in a black security uniform approached, with dark brown hair and a sharp face. He looked at the car with an emotionless gaze.
"Mrs. Omey's men?" His voice was low.
Mrs. Omey sat next to Karen, opened the car door, and stepped out first.
"Uva, this is my son, Remi. He's here to fulfill his promise."
Uva didn't react immediately. He stared at Karen, his eyes narrowed as if he was assessing her. Karen tried not to appear nervous, she bowed her head slightly, trying to keep her composure. Uva didn't say anything more, just raised his chin to signal the gatekeeper behind. The heavy iron gate slowly opened, revealing a stone path leading inside.
"Follow me."
Mrs. Omey then took out her phone from her coat pocket and threw it to Karen.
"You're here, I'll keep my promise. But remember, don't be foolish enough to cause trouble."
Karen hurriedly grabbed the phone, feeling like there was a glimmer of hope. But at that moment, Mrs. Omey turned and left, leaving her alone to face the new reality.
Inside the Asinla mansion, Karen followed Uva, passing through the large garden. The bushes were neatly trimmed, a large fountain was located in the center, reflecting the sparkling lights. The bodyguard gathering yard was surprisingly large, and at this moment, there were about twenty or so people standing there. Everyone was wearing black training clothes, some were chatting quietly with each other, others were standing solemnly waiting for orders.
Karen felt her heart beat faster. Could she really fool them? But she didn't have time to think much, because right after that, a tense atmosphere suddenly enveloped the entire yard. Everyone turned their heads to look at the main door of the mansion.
A man walked out. He was wearing a well-fitted black suit, holding an old-fashioned cigarette in his hand. He walked slowly but with authority. His face was cold and angular, his eyes were as black as the abyss. He was over 1m8 tall, with a solid body, broad shoulders and an overwhelming demeanor. “Edward.” Karen held her breath. This was the first time she had seen a real-life mafia billionaire. He stopped in front of the yard, his eyes sweeping over each person as if he was selecting his prey. The atmosphere became suffocatingly silent. After a few seconds, Edward sat down on the chair that the servant had placed, his legs crossed, the cigarette still loosely held between his fingers.
“I don’t care where you come from, who introduced you, or what you’ve done before.” His voice was deep, not loud but full of authority.
“Just remember one thing: I am the law here.”
A few people swallowed.
"For three months, you will undergo harsh training. Only the strongest will stand firm. The weak... will know how to disappear."
Edward looked at each person. When his eyes stopped on Karen, she felt her heart stop. Did he notice anything unusual? But in just a second, Edward took his eyes off her and continued speaking:
"Put your belongings in your room. Each person has been given a room card. In half an hour, gather here for a physical examination."
He stood up, took a drag of his cigarette, and exhaled a white cloud of smoke.
“Whoever fails the test… can pack up and leave tonight.”
With that, Edward turned and walked inside. Karen was still standing there, her heart heavy.
“Can I pass this test? If not, tonight might be my last night in the Asinla mansion.”
