Lu Yao chased after the shadow not far ahead of him. The branches on both sides scratched his camouflage outfit, but he didn't care. He was bent on catching the other party.
The figure moved so fast that even his keen eyes were unable to see its face clearly. From a glimpse though, he could tell it was the black bear that had been following them.
Lu Yao had fought it once. Aware of its strength, he didn't dare to be rash. He observed while chasing after it. Soon, he found although it was running with its arms and legs, it was actually not the case. From how it exerted strength, Lu Yao realized that the driving force came from its legs, just like humans.
In Lu Yao's view, it should be a human in bear form. It couldn't be a spirit bear.
"Stop, I know you are not a black bear. You are a human. I saw through your guise. Stop, or I will shoot!" Before identifying the other party, Lu Yao would not shoot rashly. He didn't like killing and he recalled his first encounter with the bear. Given the bear's strength, it could have killed Xu Yi with ease, but it actually spared Xu Yi.
The bear heard his warning but did not stop immediately. Its footsteps slowed down though, and it glanced back at Lu Yao.
Its eyes were as crimson as they looked last time.
Lu Yao continued to chase after it. Meanwhile, he took out two silver needles and tossed them out with the Leaf Picking technique. They darted towards the knees of the bear. Once hit, the bear would fall but not die.
The bear glanced at Lu Yao and continued to run. With its back towards him, the bear suddenly rolled sideways swiftly when the needles almost reached its legs.
Lu Yao was shocked. Ever since he had activated the innate spiritual power in his body, the Leaf Picking technique had never missed a target. The bear, however, had avoided his needles twice.
He took out another four silver needles and tossed them with the same technique. This time, he attacked four vital acupoints on its back and wanted to see how it would respond.
"Ting! Ting! Ting! Ting!"
While the silver needles were still flying, the bear suddenly stopped in its tracks. Four black objects came out of nowhere and collided with the needles.
Following a burst of sparks, the silver needles and the black objects fell into the grass. Lu Yao's perception and observation were keen, but he still failed to figure out what the objects were.
Without a doubt, the other party was an expert of hidden weapons.
"What kind of monster are you? Why are you following my team?" Lu Yao asked warily as the bear stopped running.
The bear didn't answer.
Lu Yao didn't ask either. From dozens of meters away, he saw its face clearly for the first time.
The bear on its feet was not tall and even a few centimeters shorter than him. It was only about the same height as his ears, and it was bare-footed. Like human hands, its fingers were split. Black and thick hair covered its body and face.
What impressed Lu Yao the most was that it had distinct features although most of them were covered by thick hair. The bridge of its nose was even taller than his. The size of its eyes was medium, and they were bloodshot.
On such a moonlit night, it looked terrifying.
Lu Yao's strongest point was his great strength, but the other party could match him. Its skills of hidden weapons were also comparable to his. For a moment, he didn't dare to act rashly. His hands slowly reached out for his silver needles in case the bear made a sudden move.
Lu Yao's movements were tactful but they were still noticed by the bear. Suddenly, it said, "I mean no harm to you!"
"You can talk!" Although their encounter was not friendly, Lu Yao believed the bear and picked up the conversation.
"I smelled Millennial Herba Cynomorii on you." The bear changed the subject.
Millennial Herba Cynomorii? How did the other party know? Could it be...
As Lu Yao didn't reply, the bear's patience ran thin as it said unkindly, "You are very strong, but no one knows the environment of Yunwu Mountain better than me. If you refuse to tell me, believe it or not, I'll get away and get rid of the seventeen of you without being found."
It was a threat, a n***d threat. Lu Yao lost his temper, circulated his innate spiritual power, and was prepared to fight.
"Young man, as I said, I mean no harm. This is important to me. I have to know the answer. My patience is limited, and you shouldn't keep challenging me!" The bear noticed his movement and warned him, "Your innate spiritual power is just primary. Although I'm not able to kill you, I can leave safely!"
The other party... saw it through?
Who was the bear exactly? Should he answer the question or not?
The situation was a gamble. The bear was the croupier while he was the gambler.
If he refused to answer, people in Yunwu Mountain, including the Elite Team, the Falcon Assault Team, and the disguisers, would be in danger since the bear had figured out their number and some secrets about him, such as the Millennial Herba Cynomorii and the innate spiritual power.
But if he told the bear the truth, would it harm Miao Jingtian and people in Miao Village?
Lu Yao was torn. As if something suddenly crossed his mind, the bear softened his tone. "My surname is Miao!"
My surname is Miao!
Upon hearing the few simple words, Lu Yao decided to put a bet for the sake of the safety of his fellow soldiers.
"Yes, it is Millennial Herba Cynomorii, but I didn't steal or rob it from anyone. I traded it." Lu Yao answered without letting his guard down. His right hand was still pressing on the pouch of needles.
"Trade?" Surprised with his answer, the bear thought for a while and asked, "You knew Jingtian?"
Upon hearing the name, Lu Yao moved his right hand away from the needles.
Looked like he had the right bet. When the bear mentioned Jingtian, he detected a tinge of concern in its tone.
Lu Yao relaxed his vigilance and softened his tone. "Yeah, I know a man named Miao Jingtian. I cured his rheumatism and bone poison in exchange for the Millennial Herba Cynomorii!"
"So it is!"
"Can you tell me who you are now?" Lu Yao asked, seeing that the other party had let his guard down.
After a long silence, the bear said slowly, "My name is Miao Fu. I'm Jingtian's uncle!"
"What? You are Miao Fu?" Lu Yao was shocked.
Lu Yao had heard about the man from Dr. Hu many times. Miao Fu was known as an aficionado of medicine. According to Dr. Hu, he got along with Miao Fu and admired him. Lu Yao had never expected him to look like this.
"Yeah, in the flesh!"
"You?"
"You wondered how I became like this?" The bear saw through Lu Yao's thoughts and laughed bitterly, "I was set up by someone who applied insect poison to me. It turned me into a monster!"
"Insect poison again!" Lu Yao muttered inwardly.
"Who did this to you?" Lu Yao asked with feigned composure.
"His surname is also Miao!" The bear gritted his teeth, "It was my younger brother, Miao Lu..."
The bear briefly told Lu Yao what had happened to him. It turned out that he had a twin brother named Miao Lu.
Long ago, Miao Lu quietly left Miao Village. A few years later, on a windy and rainy night, this man, covered in wounds and carbuncles, sneaked back.
Worried about his brother, Miao Fu treated Miao Lu with the little innate spiritual power he had cultivated with the help of rare treasures and herbs. After forty-nine restless days, he finally removed all the deadly poisons from Miao Lu.
Due to the hard work and the adverse effect of circulating innate spiritual power by force, Miao Fu was tired out when Miao Lu got better. The vicious man got an unknown poisonous insect and planted it into Miao Fu while he was too weak to defend himself.
Miao Lu was so cruel that he ditched Miao Fu to a place called Wolf Valley in the depths of Yunwu Mountain in the dead of the night, and pushed him off the cliff.
Fortunately, Miao Fu was caught by the branch of a large tree on the cliff and survived.
It was the darkest time of his life. His energy had run out. He would eat tree bark when he was hungry and chew the leaves when he was thirsty. Half a month later, he finally regained some strength.
Worried about Miao Lu's greater plot, Miao Fu wanted to return to Miao Village and kill the vicious man.
Unexpectedly, the insect poison in him was so strange that whenever he met people of the Miao bloodline, it would attack him and make him hysterical and bloodthirsty. There was no way he could resist it.
What pained him even more was that he lost control of himself and killed some Miao clansmen when he rushed to Miao Village for revenge.
When he sobered up, he recalled the painful experience and weighed all the options. After that, he never left Yunwu Mountain again, leading a ghostly life.
Then he accidentally spotted Lu Yao and smelled Millennial Herba Cynomorii on him. After several encounters, he thought that it was an opportunity and took the risk of luring Lu Yao out.
