Isabella’s POV
For a long, agonizing moment, he didn’t move. His sharp gray gaze dragged slowly over every inch of my exposed body, lingering on the curve of my breasts, the dip of my waist, the vulnerable shadow between my thighs where water still traced glistening paths down my skin.
The air thickened between us, heavy with his stunned silence and my burning humiliation.
His jaw tightened.
Something darker flickered in his eyes—hunger mixed with disgust, as if he hated himself for looking, yet couldn’t stop.
I stood frozen, heart hammering so violently I thought it might crack my ribs. Goosebumps erupted across my damp flesh. My hands flew up instinctively, one arm crossing over my chest, the other dropping lower, but it was useless. Too late. The damage was done.
Seconds stretched into what felt like minutes. Then, without a word, he turned on his heel, broad shoulders rigid under his tailored suit.
But he stopped halfway to the door, his back still to me. His voice cut through the silence, low and mocking, laced with that cruel edge I was beginning to know too well.
“You have exactly two minutes to cover yourself and get to the dining room, Isabella. Eat something. Or don’t. Starve through the entire press circus on an empty stomach if you want… I couldn’t care less. But if you make me wait again…”
He let the threat hang, a bitter chuckle escaping him. “Well, we both know how creative I can get with punishments. Tick-tock, Mrs. Harrington.”
The door slammed shut behind him, the sound jolting me into motion.
I snatched the towel from the floor, wrapping it tightly around my trembling body as tears of rage and shame stung my eyes.
How dare he?
The arrogance, the cold detachment—it fueled the fire in my chest even as fear coiled tighter. I wasn’t a person to him. Just a broken doll to torment.
I dressed in record time, fingers fumbling with the delicate lace panties and a sleek cream blouse paired with tailored black pants from the Chanel collection.
The fabric felt foreign against my skin, too luxurious for the prisoner wearing it. I ran a brush through my damp hair, leaving it down as the maid had suggested, and slipped on simple heels.
My reflection in the mirror looked polished, elegant even… but the haunted eyes staring back betrayed everything.
Downstairs, the dining room was a cavernous space of dark wood and crystal chandeliers. Charlie sat at the head of the long table, scrolling through his phone with feigned indifference.
A plate waited for me, still warm.
I ate mechanically, barely tasting the eggs and fruit, his two-minute warning echoing in my head. He didn’t speak. Neither did I.
Exactly one hour later, the makeup artist arrived—a short woman with a kit full of creams and powders. She worked quickly, concealing the puffiness under my eyes, adding a soft glow to my cheeks, and painting my lips a subtle rose.
“You look radiant,” she murmured, but her eyes held pity.
By the time she finished, I barely recognized the composed woman in the mirror. A perfect mask for the nightmare beneath.
The drive to the press venue passed in tense quietness. Charlie’s sleek black car cut through the city streets like a predator.
His hand rested on the seat between us, close enough that I could feel the heat, but he never touched me. Bodyguards flanked us on all sides as we arrived at the sleek glass building downtown. Cameras flashed the moment we stepped out, a swarm of reporters pressing against velvet ropes.
Charlie’s hand settled possessively on the small of my back as we entered the conference room. The touch was firm, calculated for the lenses.
In public, we were the picture of new marital bliss. His fingers pressed just enough to remind me: Play along.
We took our seats at a long table draped in white cloth, microphones bristling like thorns. Charlie leaned in slightly, his breath brushing my ear. “Smile, Isabella. Or I’ll make sure your family feels the consequences.”
I forced a smile, teeth clenched behind it as the interview began smoothly enough.
The lead reporter, a polished woman in a navy suit, opened with the expected questions.
“Mr. Harrington, this marriage comes as a shock to everyone. Can you tell us how you and Isabella met and fell in love so quickly?”
Charlie’s voice was smooth, the practiced charm of a billionaire who owned every room he entered.
“Isabella and I have known each other through mutual circles for some time. What started as friendship deepened rapidly. When you find the right person, time becomes irrelevant.”
His hand covered mine on the table, warm and steady for the cameras. I squeezed back lightly, playing the doting wife, though my palm was slick with sweat.
I spoke when prompted, my voice steadier than I felt. “Charlie has been… supportive through some difficult family matters. We’re committed to building a life together.” The lies tasted metallic, but they flowed.
The world ate it up… flashes popped, murmurs of approval rippled through the crowd.
More questions followed: our plans for the future, life in the Harrington mansion, charitable causes we’d support as a couple.
Charlie answered with effortless charisma, painting us as a power duo, while I nodded along, inserting soft affirmations. For a while, it went too well. The performance was flawless.
Then the tone shifted. A male reporter in the back stood, microphone in hand. “There are rumors circulating, Mr. Harrington… whispers of coercion, even kidnapping. Some sources claim Isabella was seen being taken against her will the night of the gala. Care to address that?”
The room fell into a charged hush.
My heart stuttered as Charlie’s grip on my hand tightened almost painfully, but his expression remained calm, a slight amused smile playing on his lips.
“Baseless gossip,” he replied coolly. “People love drama, especially when it involves wealth. Isabella came willingly. Our marriage is consensual, filed legally, and we’re very happy. Aren’t we, darling?”
I nodded, forcing warmth into my eyes. “Absolutely. Those rumors are ridiculous. I’m exactly where I want to be.”
The lie burned, but I held the smile as cameras captured every of my expression.
Another reporter jumped in. “And the Reed family business? There are reports of financial pressures—”
“Handled privately,” Charlie cut in smoothly. “As any family would expect.”
The interview wrapped on a high note, applause and more flashes.
We stood, Charlie’s arm sliding around my waist as we posed for final photos. He even pressed a chaste kiss to my temple, drawing “awwnns,” from the crowd.
Inside, I was screaming and cursing him.
As we moved toward the exit, bodyguards clearing a path through the lingering press, the facade held. Charlie murmured praises under his breath. “Not bad. Keep it up and maybe I’ll let you have that phone charger after all.”
“What?" I breathed.
So, he actually stopped the maid from getting me a charger.
We stepped outside into the bright daylight, the car waiting just steps away.
Relief flickered, until chaos erupted.
A familiar voice pierced the air.
“Isabella!”
My head snapped toward the sound.
Arielle burst through the crowd, shoving past a security guard with surprising force.
Her eyes were wild, hair disheveled, face etched with desperate fury.
“Bella! Oh God, Bella, they said you are now married to him! I’ve been wondering how—”
Guards converged, but she was faster, scattering through them, arms outstretched as she fought to reach me. “Don’t touch me! Let me through! Isabella, tell them!”
