The courthouse was already full when Elena arrived. Cameras were clustered near the steps, and voices overlapping. SECURITY escorted her through a side entrance, but not before flashes captured the pale determination on her face and the hand she kept pressed lightly to her abdomen
Mara was seated at the respondent’s table, her shoulders squared, while Leo was absent due to a court order. When Mara looked up and spotted Elena, an unspoken understanding passed between them.
Vivian Cross was the last to arrive. She didn’t look at the cameras. She walked straight to the front row, elegant and composed. People moved aside even without being asked.
The judge took his place on the bench.
“This is an emergency hearing regarding guardianship, medical misconduct, and the welfare of a minor,” Judge Halvorsen announced. “We will proceed with caution.”
Vivian’s attorney stood first. He spoke smoothly, citing concern, instability, and risk to the child. He painted Mara as unstable and Elena as emotionally affected by pregnancy.
When he finished, the room hummed with uncontrolled judgment.
Grace Whitman stood up. “We call Dr. Caleb Rowan.”
A ripple moved through the gallery. Caleb took the stand, his eyes fixed forward.
Grace didn’t waste any time.
“Dr. Rowan,” she began, “did the Cross Foundation Hospital reassign embryos without explicit patient consent?”
Caleb swallowed hard. “Yes.”
Vivian’s attorney objected, but the judge overruled him.
Grace continued, “Were embryos belonging to Elena Cross implanted into another woman?”
“Yes.”
A murmur spread through the room.
Grace held up the genetic report. “And the child known as Leo Vale, whose biological child is he?”
Caleb locked eyes with Elena for the briefest moment.
“Hers.”
Vivian’s attorney sprang up from his seat, but the judge raised a hand to pause him.
“Let the record reflect,” Judge Halvorsen said slowly, “that this court has just heard sworn testimony regarding medical fraud.”
Elena stood up then.Grace hadn’t asked her to.
“I am not unstable,” Elena declared, her voice steady. “I know and I am done being silent.”
Vivian turned to face her, eyes sharp as daggers. Elena faced her fully.
“You stole my child,” Elena said. “You called it plan B. You erased me from the decision-making process, and now you want the law to do the same.”
Vivian rose, offended. “You're just putting on a show...”
“No,” the judge interjected. “This is testimony.”
Grace submitted the notarized letter that Mara had provided.
Custody backup plans. Failure to comply, signed by Vivian.
The judge read slowly, taking it all in. Vivian’s composure began to c***k.
Mara stood next. “I didn’t take a child,” she stated firmly. “I protected a Hooke child no one wanted to acknowledge. I didn’t seduce anyone or scheme. I endured.”
Her voice trembled only once.
“They want him now,” Mara continued, “because he matters again.”
Silence filled the room, then a movement from the back.
Adrian stood up. Every head turned.
“I want to testify,” he said hoarsely.
Vivian’s head snapped around. “Sit down.”
He remained standing.
“I knew there was a child,” Adrian admitted. “I didn’t know the child was Elena’s. I chose not to ask questions because not knowing was easier.”
Elena closed her eyes in release.
Judge Halvorsen leaned forward.
“This court is issuing immediate orders,” he announced. “Temporary guardianship of the minor will remain with Mara Vale. All CPS actions are suspended pending investigation. Furthermore, this court is referring the Cross Foundation Hospital for criminal review.”
The gavel struck. Vivian remained standing as the room erupted with voices clashing, cameras flashing, pure chaos. She looked at Elena one last time.
Outside, reporters surged.
Inside, Elena’s knees finally gave away. Mara caught her elbow firmly.
“We’re not done,” Mara whispered under her breath.
Elena nodded. “I know.”
As they stepped out together, separately yet united, Vivian found herself alone for the first time in her life.
