Chap 3

454 Words
Elena waited until morning. She wanted daylight, to see Adrian clearly without excuses. They sat across from each other at the breakfast table, the same one where they’d shared a decade of neutral conversations. The sunlight sliced through the room, casting bright lines across the marble surface, illuminating the untouched coffee between them. “You have a child,” Elena stated flatly. She didn’t raise her voice, nor did she soften it. Adrian froze for a moment, surprised. How did she know? That pause told her everything. He set his cup down carefully. “It’s complicated,” he replied. Elena almost smiled. “It’s a yes or no question.” He exhaled. “Yes.” There it was. No explosion, no denial. Just a straightforward confirmation, delivered like an overdue confession. “How old?” she asked. “Six.” Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table. Six years of birthdays. Six years of silence. Six years when doctors had looked her in the eye and told her sometimes it just doesn’t happen. "Does your mother know?” Elena asked. Adrian’s jaw flexed. “She’s… aware.” Of course she was. “Did you ever plan to tell me?” “I didn’t think it mattered anymore.” “You didn’t think your living child mattered,” she repeated. “Or you didn’t think I did.” Adrian stood, restless now. “It was before we were married.” “And after I had my third failed implantation,” she said softly. He stopped moving. She watched realization spread across his face. “She didn’t want anything from me,” he rushed to explain. “No disruption. No drama. I paid, and that was it.” Elena rose as well, steady on her feet despite the unfamiliar heaviness in her body. “The woman sent me his photograph,” Elena said. “He goes to Calderon Academy.” Adrian’s eyes widened. “That’s...” “An elite school,” Elena finished. “The one you said was too expensive for our future children.” “Elena,” he said, lowering his voice. “This doesn't change anything.” She let out a laugh, just once. “This changes everything,” she said. “Because now I know what you’re capable of hiding.” Her phone buzzed on the table. A message from an unsaved number. Sunday brunch is mandatory. Vivian knows you’ve been informed. Elena looked at Adrian as the truth settled in. She placed her hand over her stomach. “If anything happens to my child,” Elena said, her voice chillingly calm, “I will burn every version of this family you’re trying to hold together.” Adrian stayed silent.
