I didn't feel the confidence that he did in my safety. Whoever had killed my mother hadn't known of my existence, but our picture had been in the paper. They would know now. "Jack, our picture was in the paper. There's no way they don't know I exist."
His smile widened. "Oh, they know you exist, but your birth certificate lists Linda as your mother and even though your father's line was powerful, he inherited nothing from them. I am shielding your powers from them. They think you're about as powerful as that lady who claims she can see dead people."
