Lucky Women

Cresia listened to Marky’s mother as it explained how the doctors could not do anything to her health. It was too personal and emotional to be there, listening and watching, but she could not do anything about it. She could see how Mrs. Lavenia Cervantes seemed so kind and intelligent, not to mention how she talks angelically with her son like her child is still a kid. She could sleep just by the sound of the lady’s voice. “I don’t want you getting angry with your father,” the lady said and smiled at Marky. “Then what do you want me to do? Pretend that I do not know anything about it?” “You know that he is capable of kicking you out of your job position, son. We both know how you worked hard to earn a Chief Executive Director, thanks to your father.” When Cresia looked at her boss, he lowered his gaze, as if he realized that his mother was right. Even Cresia knew how important the CEO position was to Marky, which is why he should not be impulsive like this way. “I love your father,” Mrs. Cervantes stated firmly and had a bold glimpse in her eyes. “But that does not mean that I will tolerate his cheating nature.” “Then what do you want me to do, Mom.” “It could be a lot to you.” “Not if this is for you, Mom.” Mrs. Lavenia Cervantes looked intently at her son who is prepared to listen to what she is saying. She even took a deep sigh to look thrilled. “Get married and have children,” she suggested. Marky was motionless, while Cresia slowly lifted her eyebrow. She slowly shook her head, and Marky almost chuckled out of frustration, not because it was funny. Cresia knows his tone and mood very well, and she could guess that the suggestion made by his mother was not funny at all. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” Marky said. “I never had a girlfriend, Mom!” “It’s because you never go out. You are always in your study, and your father expected you to be like that. He is gone sick about it, that is why he needs to shift his attention from having affairs to having a daughter-in-law and his grandsons.” “I… I can’t do that. I don’t know anything about… stupid relationships.” “I thought you are going to do anything for me,” Mrs. Cervantes said using her disappointing tone. “Would you let me die without granting my final death wish?” After Mrs. Cervantes left the office, Marky was lying on the couch in the drawing area. Cresia thought of getting his espresso coffee in the hallway so that he could relax his mind. When he came back to the office, he was leaning down the table with both hands while turning his back on Cresia. “Sir?” Cresia called with a cup of coffee in his hand. “I made you a cup of coffee.” “Should I get married?” he mumbled vulnerable. Cresia kept her silence because she thinks she has no position to interfere with the life of her boss. She just closed her mouth and listened to him. “I never had a true youth where fun exists. I find it distracting and dumb,” he shared and snorted sarcastically. “That may be the reason why I don’t have friends and disregarded the idea of having relationships. Because I am too focused on the pressure my father was giving me in inheriting his company and becoming the best version he wants me to be…” She watched her boss shift his weight and for the first time in her life, she saw him vulnerable and confused, his gaze on the floor and his shoulders lowering. It was like she is looking at a kid who is lost in the bad world. “But now, I realized he does not deserve to be a hero at all,” he said and shut his eyes. “That is why I will follow my mother’s wish, but I will never do it for him.” “It is for your mother, sir,” she said. “If that would be her dying wish and if you really love her very much, I would do it.” It made her think about her grandmother who is in the house. She would also do everything just for her family, even if her life is at a cost. Her parents are already gone and the only family she has is her grandmother who took care of her since she was still a child. Marky’s eyes lifted at her and smiled a little. He nodded slowly. Because of his reaction, she felt light in her heart and mind that he is now gone from his bad mood and suspense. Deep inside, Cresia could see that Marky is sweet and kind-hearted. He just learned to be conceited due to his complicated and dull life’s events. “It’s for my mother,” he agreed and looked at the coffee she was holding. “Can I have my coffee?” She smiled. “Of course, sir.” Cresia gave the hot cup to her boss and watched him sip it. After savoring the sip, Marky took a deep breath and looked at her. “I want you to set me up with dates,” he said. “I want to find a wife who deserves me.” Cresia would want to lift her eyebrow because the women he would date will be so unfortunate, but because he is in a situation where her sympathy is, she will help him, then. It is her job after all. “Of course, sir,” she said. “I will research tonight and reserve dates for you." Marky smirked and looked at the air as if imagining things. “I wonder how the woman I will marry would feel grateful and lucky once she marries me,” he said and gazed at his secretary. “Don’t you think, Ms. Montenegro?” “W-Well, yes, of course, sir. She would be really… lucky,” she said with a papery smile even though she wants to throw up.
