After graduating from college, we all think jobs will be easier to obtain. It has been 5 months since graduating and I have had zero luck in finding a job. The main problem that I lack is experience. There are companies want you to have 3 to 5 years of experience for entry level positions. I am not even making it to the interviewing process because I have no experience. It makes everything so discouraging and wondering if I made the right decision by going to college and not finding work first.
“Shyla, wake up I got to show you something.” Brielle, my best friend since kindergarten came bursting in my room.
I slowly open my eyes, trying to rub the sleepiness away. “What is it?” I asked sitting up on the bed.
She handed me a newspaper article that she was holding. I looked over the newspaper and did not see anything interesting. “Why are you handing me this newspaper? I did not even know that they still existed.” I exclaim.
“That is why you are having a challenging time finding a job. Old school ways sometimes work too. Look under the jobs section, I highlighted a job.” Brielle leaned forwarded and pointed to her pink marker that circled “Urgent, immediately need a PR assistant for a wealthy family in the country of Santa Yara Island.” The article talked about pay, living with the family within the compound, and your job duties.
“You should look into; it might be worth looking into” Brielle said closing my bedroom door.
She had a point, the worst thing I could do is not try. All they needed was a resume sent to the email that was in the ad. I grabbed my phone and sent the resume over to the email that was in the news article. I locked my phone and closed my eyes as I laid my head on my pillow. I started thinking about life in another country and doing a job that I will love. This was a new experience, but I was excited to take on the challenge if accepted.
My phone scared me as it rang loud in my ears; I did not realize that I had fallen asleep. As I opened my eyes, I noticed that it was early afternoon, and a weird number was calling my phone.
“Hello” I said confidently.
“Hello Ms. Wolfe, my name is Isabell, I know this is very soon, but we would like to interview you for the job that you applied for today as a public relations specialist for my employers. Is tomorrow morning a suitable time for you to meet?” The woman on the other line had a very calming voice. Her accent was strong but beautiful. Never hearing the accent before made me mesmerize by her voice. Her calming tone was strong and confident.
Shocked by the news, I tried to regain my own confidence before I began speaking.
“Hello, tomorrow morning is perfect. I am available all morning.” I said trying not to sound desperate.
“Perfect, there is a coffee shop near the hotel I am staying at. I am overly impressed with your resume and honestly you were the only person who replied. Technology is not my strong suite, so I apologize in advance. I will text you all the details in. See you tomorrow Ms. Wolfe.”
We said our goodbyes and I jumped out of bed to tell Brielle. I ran down the hall to see that her bedroom door was open. I walked into her room and saw her sitting at her desk reading.
“Hey, what’s going on?” She said noticing me at the door.
“I have an interview with the company that I applied for this morning.” I said smiling widely.
“OMG, that’s amazing!” Brielle ran up to me and gave me the tightest hug she has ever given me, and she is a huge hugger.
We have been friends for so long and been through so much together. I am not sure what I would have done without her in my life. After my parents passed away, I felt like I did not have anyone. I was the only child so there were no siblings for me to grieve with. Brielle stepped up and became not only my best friend but my family. Not that she was not before, but that only proved it.
After a long pause she stepped back. “Tell me everything.”
As I started explaining to her the phone call I had with Isabell, I begin to admire my best friend and how beautiful she always is. Her honey like complexion with her sandy brown hair and hazel eyes always made her look different. She always called herself exotic.
After leaving Brielle’s room, I went to my closet to see what outfit I should wear to my potential dream job. I know I should dress to impress and wearing a modest dress with heels can never go wrong. As I started checking out each dress, I saw my yellow dress that fits this perfect occasion. I pulled the dress out and laid it across my bed. I knew that I was going to be a nervous wreck for the rest of the day, so I decided to go to the gym for three hours.
By the time I got home, it was time for dinner and spaghetti was calling my name. As I started cooking dinner, I hear Brielle and her boyfriend laughing her in room. I know one day I will have to let her go so she feels comfortable enough to take her relationship to the next level. She feels obligated to be with me, so I am not completely alone and feel abandoned. I want her to be happy and this job will be a way to free her from that burden.
After I ate and cleaning the kitchen, I took a long hot shower. I stood in the shower just letting the water hit me. I closed my eyes and thought of my parents. I wondered if they were proud of me. They did not make it to see my high school graduation and by the time I got my masters, I expected being the only one who did not have family surrounding them. As I drift off to sleep, the excitement for the interview starts to settle in.
The morning sun shines through my window as I open my eyes. Today will be the day that hopefully changes my life. As I sit up on my bed, I check my phone for the text message Isabell sent to me yesterday. The coffee shop is a favorite of mine and is only a block away from my apartment. Since today is a wonderful day, walking seems more logical. I have walked in heels every day for 6 years, so walking a block will be a walk in the park.
As I dressed myself, I walked in front of my mirror to look at my appearance. I placed my locs into a neat bun and rubbed my hands along my culvers. My hazel nut complemented the yellow dress hugging my body. I gave one last look of approval before grabbing my purse to head out the door.
As I walked into the coffee shop, a woman sitting in the corner waved me over. She was a beautiful middle-aged woman with soft blue eyes and deep brown hair tied into a ponytail. Her smile was big and felt genuine. As I approached her table, she stood up and extended her hand.
“Hello Ms. Wolfe, nice to meet you, I am Isabell. I looked your picture up before I came, I hope that was okay.” Her handshake was firm, and that calming voice made me feel so comfortable that I almost missed her comment.
“That is absolutely fine, I don’t mind at all.” I sat down across from her as she took her sit.
“I hope you do not mind but the private jet leaves soon for me, so I hope you do not mind if we make this quick. I will tell you more about the position and we will go from there” she stated as she started pulling out papers from a folder.
After the interview, we both stood up and shook each other hands. Isabella promised that once she speak with the family, she will give me a call and let me know their decision. She promised she would put in a good word because she was impressed by my resume and personality.
I walked out the coffee shop hopeful. This could be my new beginning. I was optimistic about this new life of mine that I can have. As I made my way home, I picked up breakfast from our favorite café. I was excited to get home and tell Brielle all about the job. I knew she just waking up now and was ready to hear all about it.
