“There is no need for the Duchess to take it on herself to make such arrangements,” the Countess said sharply. “Mrs. Field is well aware which is my room and I have already told the butler where the rest of the party will sleep.”
Elfa behaved as if she had not heard this and, as she moved away from the Duke’s side, Harry hurried ahead to open the door for her.
She stopped to say to him,
“I am glad to tell you the horses arrived home safely and were none the worse either for the journey or for the hard exercise we gave them.”
“I am delighted to hear that,” he said.
He thought of following her into the hall and apologising to her, but he was not quite certain if she would think that he was interfering.
