Chapter4

Elmira’s footsteps were nearly silent as she navigated the shadowy corridors of Henry’s mansion. The broken glass incident had plunged the house into a tense silence, one punctuated only by the distant hum of the city outside. She could hear her own heartbeat, loud in her ears, as she approached the source of the disturbance. Turning a corner, she nearly collided with Henry, who was just returning from investigating. His face was taut, a sign that the situation was more serious than a simple break-in. "What happened?" Elmira asked, her voice low and tense. Henry’s eyes searched her face, weighing how much to reveal. "It’s nothing to worry about," he replied, but his voice betrayed his concern. "Just a broken window in one of the ground floor rooms. It could have been a stray ball or something trivial. The security team is handling it." "But the timing," Elmira pressed, not convinced by his reassurance. "Right when we were about to discuss something crucial? "Henry sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Elmira, this might sound paranoid, but I think it’s best if you stay here tonight. It’s late, and I don’t like the idea of you going back alone." Her initial instinct was to refuse, to maintain her independence, but another part of her—the part alarmed by the anonymous warnings and the photo—wanted to stay and uncover more about what was really happening. "Alright, I’ll stay," she conceded, but on one condition. "You tell me everything. Why was I followed? Why are there photos of me from before we even met?" Henry led her back to the study, where he poured two glasses of whiskey and handed one to her. The golden liquid flickered in the dim light as he began to speak. "My father had been keeping an eye on you before he passed away," Henry confessed, his gaze fixed on the amber swirl in his glass. "He believed you had the potential to be more than just a strategic partner. He saw in you the qualities he once admired in my mother." Elmira’s mind reeled. "Your father? But why? I didn’t even know him. ""He knew of you through your work, through the circles he moved in. He believed you could influence me, temper some of my... harsher tendencies." She took a sip of whiskey, letting the warmth settle her nerves as she processed his words. "And the marriage proposal?" "That was my idea," Henry admitted, looking up at her with a rueful smile. "A clumsy attempt to bring you into my world, under my terms. But now, I think it was the wrong approach." The conversation was cut short by the sound of Henry’s phone ringing. He glanced at the caller ID, frowned, and then stepped aside to take the call. Elmira took the moment to ponder the swirling complexities Henry had laid before her. When he returned, his face was even more drawn. "That was my security chief. The broken window wasn’t an accident. Someone was trying to get inside." A chill ran down Elmira’s spine. "Do you think it has something to do with me? With what your father started?" "It’s possible," Henry said, his voice grave. "And there’s something else—you weren’t just followed. My father had instructed his team to ensure your safety, without your knowledge." "Why would he care about my safety? "Henry was silent for a moment, then looked directly into her eyes. "Because the threats against you might be tied to his last and most dangerous business rivalry. He might have thought you were his ace in the hole." The room seemed to grow colder, the weight of Henry’s words sinking in. Elmira set down her glass, her thoughts racing. This game was far bigger and far more perilous than she had imagined. As they stood there, trying to piece together the fragmented clues, another sound shattered the night—the unmistakable crash of a door being forced open somewhere in the large house. Henry looked at Elmira, his expression hardening. "Stay behind me," he said, moving towards the door of the study. As they stepped out, the sound of footsteps echoed through the hall, fast approaching. Elmira felt her pulse quicken, ready for whatever—or whoever—was coming their way. The night was far from over, and she knew that each step now might draw them deeper into shadows they were only beginning to comprehend.
