Chapter 8: My Priority is Ellie

542 Words
The hallway was heavy with silence as Lena stood her ground, her arms wrapped protectively around Ellie. Damian’s piercing gaze locked onto her, his face unreadable. But Lena didn’t care. Her blood was still boiling. She didn’t think about who he was. She didn’t think about how powerful he was. The only thing she cared about was Ellie. And right now, that little girl had been hurt in her own home. Lena turned on him, her voice sharp, her emotions burning hotter than ever. “Do you even care if your daughter is safe when I’m not here?” Damian’s brows furrowed slightly, his expression turning colder. “What?” he said in a dangerously low tone. Lena didn’t back down. “This is her home, isn’t it? And yet, when I come back, I find her being pushed around by some disrespectful maid? You’re her father! You should make sure she’s safe at home, not just when you feel like it!” The air in the hallway thickened with tension. Ellie clung to Lena, her tiny hands fisting Lena’s shirt as she buried her face in her shoulder. The young maid stared in shock, clearly not expecting Lena to shout at Damian Blackwood of all people. No one had ever dared to raise their voice at him. But Lena wasn’t afraid. Damian took a step down the stairs, his presence intimidating, his expression unreadable. His dark eyes flickered toward the maid, then back to Lena. He exhaled slowly, placing his hands into his pockets. “You’re overreacting.” Lena’s temper snapped even further. “Overreacting?” she repeated, her voice rising. “Your five-year-old daughter just got pushed, and you’re telling me I’m overreacting?” She turned to the maid, her eyes blazing with fury. “And you—” Lena’s voice dropped to a dangerous tone, her grip on Ellie tightening. “If you dare to raise your voice or your hand against my baby again, I swear I won’t sit back and let it slide.” The young maid flinched, clearly shaken. My baby. The words had slipped out without Lena even realizing it. But she didn’t regret it. Ellie wasn’t just some child she was babysitting anymore. Ellie was hers. Damian’s eyes darkened slightly, his lips pressing into a thin line. He was silent for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, without a word, he turned his gaze back to the maid. “Leave.” His voice was cold, final. The young maid stiffened. “B-But—” “Did I stutter?” The room froze. Lena had never heard someone sound so terrifying with just two words. The maid swallowed hard, her face paling. She quickly bowed her head before hurrying away without another word. Lena still didn’t look at Damian. She had nothing to say to him. Instead, she adjusted Ellie in her arms and walked past him. She needed to get Ellie away from this mess. She needed to calm down before she said something she couldn’t take back. As she carried Ellie toward her room, she didn’t see the way Damian’s eyes followed them, his gaze lingering on the woman who had just yelled at him for his daughter. end of the chapter ---
