Chapter 6Austin bunched his pillow between his arm and his ear, his attention fixed on the bed next to him. Darkness cloaked the room, patches of light sneaking past the curtains when the clouds allowed, but Austin knew Maddox was there by his restless movements. Each creak of the mattress drew Austin’s attention no matter how he tried to ignore it. The temperature had dropped, and the heater struggled to keep the chill away, the fan blowing and muffling the sound of Maddox’s breathing. They were still in the motel, the roads were still not cleared, and Maddox still hadn’t come around. Austin watched as the clock on the nightstand ticked past, moment by slow moment.
