Chapter 2: Into the Woods
Elara looked at Lucian’s hand. It was big and waiting. She thought for a moment. Just a moment. Then she put her hand in his.
His hand was cold. But strong. He closed his fingers around hers. It felt… strange. Not bad strange. Just… new. Like nothing she felt before.
“Good,” Lucian said. Just one word. But it sounded like more than just good. It sounded like… decided. Like things were set now. Like there was no going back.
He did not pull her. He did not need to. Elara moved with him. She stepped out of her house. She closed the door behind her. She did not look back.
The night air was cold on her skin. She wore a thin dress. Not for going into the woods. But she did not think about being cold. She was too busy feeling other things. Excitement. Fear. And something else… something like… yes. This was right. This was what she needed to do.
Lucian was already walking. He walked fast. Like he knew where he was going. Like he owned the night. Elara walked next to him. She had to walk fast to keep up.
They went into the woods. Right away, the trees closed around them. It was dark under the trees. Darker than in her room. The moonlight did not come here. The trees were too thick.
But Lucian seemed to see in the dark. He moved like it was day. Sure and fast. Elara could not see the path. But he could. Or maybe he did not need a path.
The woods smelled different up close. Pine trees, like before. But also wet earth. And leaves. And something else… something wild. Like animals. But not just normal animals. Something… more. Like Lucian smelled.
The howls were gone now. It was quiet in the woods. Except for their feet on the ground. And the wind in the trees high above. And… other sounds. Small sounds. Things moving in the bushes. Birds in the trees. Night animals. Watching them.
Elara felt eyes on her. She looked around. Dark shapes between the trees. Were they animals? Or something else? Like Lucian?
She looked at Lucian. His face was hard to see in the dark. But his eyes… his silver eyes shone. They looked straight ahead. He did not look at her. Or at the woods around them. He just walked. Sure and fast.
“Where are we going?” Elara asked. Her voice was quiet. She was not sure if he would hear her.
He stopped walking. He turned to her. His silver eyes looked at her face. In the dark, they were the only thing she could really see about him.
“Home,” Lucian said. His voice was rough, but quiet. “I am taking you home, Elara.”
Home? Silverwood was her home. Wasn’t it? But now… now it felt far away. Like a dream. Like a story from a book. Not real life. Real life was now… walking into the dark woods with a wolf man.
“Your home?” Elara asked. She wanted to know more. But she did not know what to ask. Home for a wolf man… what was that like?
“My pack,” Lucian said. “My people. We live in the woods. Away from humans. Hidden.”
Pack. People. Hidden. Words that did not tell her much. But they sounded… important. Like there was a whole world she did not know about. A world hidden in the woods, right next to Silverwood. How could she not know?
“Werewolves?” Elara asked. The word felt strange in her mouth. Like a word from a story book. Not a real word. But… was it real now?
Lucian looked at her. A small smile again. Wolf smile. “Lycans,” he said. “We call ourselves Lycans. Werewolf is… human word. Not right.”
Lycans. New word. She would have to learn new words now. New things. Everything was new.
They started walking again. Lucian still walked fast. Elara tried to keep up. The woods were getting thicker. The trees were closer together. The ground went up and down. Roots and rocks under her feet. She almost fell a few times. But Lucian did not stop. Or look back.
After a while, the trees opened up a little. They came to a small open space. Moonlight came down here, in patches. Elara could see more now. See Lucian better. See the woods around.
The open space was not empty. There were… things. Shapes in the moonlight. Tents. But not normal tents. Made of animal skins. Dark and rough. And firelight. Small fires burning in a circle. And… people. Or… Lycans.
They were not all in wolf form. Some were men and women. Like Lucian, but different. Wilder looking. Stronger looking. Dressed in furs and leather. Some had… wolf parts. Ears that pointed up. Eyes that shone in the dark. Teeth that looked sharp.
And some were wolves. Big wolves. Bigger than any wolf she had ever seen in pictures. Dark fur. Silver eyes, like Lucian. They moved around the open space. Some walked. Some sat by the fires. Some looked at Elara and Lucian as they came in.
All of them stopped what they were doing. They all looked at Elara. Eyes watching her. Wolf eyes and human eyes. All… waiting. Silent.
Elara felt small. And… looked at. Like everyone was looking right at her. Seeing everything. Like Lucian’s eyes, but many more. She wanted to hide behind Lucian. But he kept walking. He walked right into the open space. Pulling her with him.
They walked to the center of the open space. To the biggest fire. Around this fire, there were more Lycans. Older ones. They sat on logs, or on the ground. They looked at Lucian. And at Elara.
Lucian stopped at the fire. He let go of Elara’s hand. He turned to face the older Lycans. He stood up straight. Tall and strong. Like a king. Or… Alpha.
“I am back,” Lucian said. His voice was loud now. Strong voice. It went all around the open space. Everyone could hear. “And I brought someone with me.”
He moved his hand. He showed Elara to them. Like she was a thing. A thing he brought home. Elara did not like that feeling. But she stood still. She looked at the older Lycans. She tried to look strong too. Even though she felt small and scared inside.
The older Lycans looked at Elara. They looked her up and down. Their eyes were hard. Not friendly. They did not smile. They did not say hello. They just watched. Like they were trying to decide something about her. Something important.
One of the older Lycans stood up. He was very old. His fur was grey. His face was full of lines. But his eyes were still sharp. Still strong. Silver eyes, like Lucian. But older. Wiser. And maybe… colder.
“Lucian,” the old Lycan said. His voice was rough too. But slower than Lucian’s. More… heavy. “Who is this human?”
Human. The word sounded strange from him. Like it was a bad word. Like humans were not good things. Elara felt her face get hot. She was human. Yes. But was that bad?
Lucian looked at the old Lycan. His face was hard now. No smile. Just strong. “This is Elara,” Lucian said. “She is… special.”
Special? Elara looked at Lucian. What did he mean? Special how? She was just… Elara. Strange girl from Silverwood. Not special.
The old Lycan looked at Elara again. His eyes went up and down again. Like he was looking through her skin. Seeing bones and blood and… something else. Something inside. Something Lucian saw too?
“Special how, Lucian?” the old Lycan asked. He did not sound like he believed Lucian. He sounded… careful. Like he did not trust humans. Or maybe… did not trust Lucian’s choices.
Lucian stepped closer to Elara. He put his hand on her shoulder. Not hard. But… there. Like he was saying: She is with me. She is mine. Elara felt a shiver under his hand. Not cold shiver. Something… different. Again.
“Elara is important to our future,” Lucian said. His voice was stronger now. Like he was talking to all the Lycans, not just the old one. “She will be… part of us.”
Part of them? Elara looked at Lucian. Part of the Lycans? What did that mean? Was he saying… she would become a Lycan? Like him? But… how? Could humans become Lycans? She did not know. She did not know anything about this world.
The old Lycan’s eyes got smaller. He looked at Lucian’s hand on Elara’s shoulder. Then back at Elara’s face. “Part of us?” he said again. “Or… something else?”
Something else? What did he mean by that? Elara felt more confused now. And more… worried. These Lycans… they were not friendly. They did not like her. They did not trust her. And maybe… Lucian did not either. Maybe he just wanted something from her. Something… special.
Lucian took his hand away from Elara’s shoulder. He turned to face the old Lycan fully. They looked at each other. Silver eyes looking into silver eyes. Strong faces hard. Like two wolves ready to fight.
“She is what we need,” Lucian said. His voice was low. But hard. “You will see. All of you will see. Elara is… the change.”
The change. Another word that did not tell her much. But it sounded big. Important. And maybe… dangerous. Elara looked around at the Lycans. They were all watching Lucian and the old Lycan. Waiting. Silent. Like the woods themselves. Holding secrets. And danger.
The old Lycan did not move. He just looked at Lucian. For a long time. Then, slowly, he nodded his head. Just a small nod. But it seemed to mean something. Like… okay. I hear you. I will wait and see. But I am still watching.
“Welcome back, Alpha,” the old Lycan said. His voice was still rough. But maybe… a little softer now. To Lucian. Not to Elara. “And… welcome, human. To our woods.” He said the last words like they did not really mean welcome. More like… we will see how long you stay.
Lucian nodded back to the old Lycan. Just a small nod too. But it was enough. For them. For the Lycans. For their… pack. Their people. Their hidden world in the woods.
He turned to Elara again. His face was still hard. But his eyes… maybe a little softer now too. Just a little. “Come,” Lucian said to Elara. “I will show you… home.”
He put his hand out again. To her. Waiting. Elara looked at his hand. Then at his silver eyes. Then at the Lycans around the fire. Watching. Waiting. Woods all around. Dark and secret. And dangerous. And new.
She took Lucian’s hand again. His hand was still cold. But it felt… stronger now. Sure. Like it could keep her safe. Or maybe… keep her with him. Either way. She was with him now. Going deeper into the woods. Into the Lycan world. Into her new… home? Maybe. She did not know. But she would find out.
Lucian pulled her gently. And they walked away from the fire. Away from the watching Lycans. Deeper into the woods. Into the dark heart of the Lycan world. Leaving Silverwood, and her old life, far behind. Starting something new. Something wild. Something unknown. With the Lycan King. In the woods. Under the moon. And under the eyes of the shadows.
