Chapter 9: The New Foundation Elias spent the next two weeks learning the dizzying ropes of his new life. Mr. Sterling assigned him a team of advisors to manage the vast financial portfolio. Elias, however, was determined not to be turned into the kind of entitled drone he had witnessed at the Vancroft estate. He insisted on modest housing and continued to wear his simple, if now better-tailored, clothes. His newfound wealth was a tool, not a new identity. He quickly liquidated a small portion of the capital to establish the Aethelred Foundation, dedicated to providing educational grants for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds—a direct homage to the opportunities he had always craved. His primary focus, however, remained the ‘Evergreen Plot’ and the Vancrofts. Elias had Mr. Sterling send a formal, professional letter to Mr. Vancroft’s business address, introducing himself as the new principal of the Aethelred Estate and the legal owner of the coveted adjacent land. He deliberately signed the letter using his full, inherited name: Elias Aethelred. He didn’t mention the gatehouse; he let the name speak for itself, knowing the Vancrofts’ obsession with lineage and social standing would do the rest. Mr. Vancroft’s immediate, frantic response confirmed Elias’s suspicions. The patriarch immediately began cold-calling Mr. Sterling, making ever-increasing offers for the land. The Vancroft’s plans for a new wing and a golf course were entirely dependent on acquiring the Evergreen Plot. Elias instructed his lawyer to arrange a formal meeting with Mr. Vancroft, not at the Vancroft estate, but at a neutral, upscale private club in the city center. He meticulously planned every detail of the confrontation. He was not going to be loud or accusatory; he was going to be calm, measured, and utterly in control—the very image of the respectable man Mr. Vancroft demanded. He knew this was a gamble. Winning the property battle was one thing; winning back Sofia, who was likely under heavy surveillance, was another. He hadn't heard from her since he was fired. But armed with his new status and the knowledge that he was no longer a beggar, Elias felt a quiet, resolute strength. He was ready to face the titan who had crushed him. He packed the small wooden hummingbird into the inner pocket of his new suit jacket, a constant reminder of the simple, honest love that had started this impossible journey.
