Chapter eleven“His Lordship has not returned, Your Grace.” “Not returned?” the Dowager’s exclamation was almost a shriek. “He was not here last night when I required him, and now we shall be leaving for the Church in twenty minutes!” Tina turned from the pier glass where she had been looking at her reflection as the lady’s maids made the last minute adjustments to her gown and veil. “His Lordship did not sleep here?” she asked. The chambermaid, who had relayed the information from a footman, who had heard it from the butler, dropped a little curtsey. “No, my lady, I mean, miss. Mr. Jarvis said ’is Lordship’s bed had not been slept in.” Tina noted the slip in her designation – ‘my Lady’ – in an hour’s time she would be entitled to be addressed in such a manner.
